Chapter 6

He turned and walked down the hallway, his footsteps fading into the quiet distance. Khloe sat there on the large bed for several seconds after he left. The silence of the mansion slowly settled around her again. She leaned back and laid down on the bed facing up, staring up at the high ceiling. Her life had changed in less than twenty-four hours. Yesterday she had been worrying about rent and eviction. Today she was living in a billionaire’s mansion as his fake fiancée. Khloe let out a soft, almost disbelieving laugh. “This is going to be a long six months,” she whispered. But somewhere deep inside her, a strange feeling lingered. Because Adrian White was not an easy man to read. As she knew he was tough, even though she didn’t know much about him but from what she heard over the years. It wasn’t going to be easy And something about the way he had answered her question made her wonder if the real danger of this contract wasn’t the lie they were about to tell the world. The real danger might be what happened if it stopped feeling like a lie. The first day in Adrian White’s world felt less like the beginning of a new life and more like stepping into a role that had already been written. Everything around Khloe moved with quiet precision. Everything had rules. Everything had timing. Everything had a purpose. And very quickly, she realized that in Adrian’s world chaos wasn’t allowed. The morning after she moved into the mansion, Khloe woke up earlier than she intended. For a moment she forgot where she was. The soft bed, the high ceiling, the wide window spilling pale sunlight across the floor it all felt unfamiliar. Then the memory returned. The contract. The mansion. Adrian White. She sat up slowly, running a hand through her hair. Her room was still perfectly quiet, the kind of quiet that only existed in very large houses where the walls were thick and the halls stretched endlessly. She lazily walked to the bathroom to brush her teeth and shower, then she proceeded to get dressed After getting dressed, she made her way downstairs. She slowly opened the door to the living room It was already occupied. A tall woman in a fitted grey suit stood beside the couch holding a tablet. Another woman, younger and dressed entirely in black, was examining the clothes Khloe had brought with her the previous day. Adrian’s assistant stood nearby. The moment Khloe stepped into the room, all three of them looked up. “Good morning, Miss Roswell,” the assistant said politely. “I hope you slept well.” Khloe nodded slowly. “Yes… thank you.” The assistant gestured toward the others. “This is Lillian. She’ll be handling your wardrobe.” The younger woman smiled politely. “And this is Vanessa, Mr. White’s public relations consultant.” The woman with the tablet stepped forward. “Nice to meet you, Khloe.” Khloe returned the greeting, still trying to understand what exactly was happening. Apparently, being the fiancée of Adrian White required preparation. A lot of preparation. Khloe sat down carefully on the couch while Lillian examined the collection of clothes she had brought from the designers boutique . The stylist lifted a blouse between two fingers. “We’ll need to update a few things,” she said gently, already typing something into her tablet. A few things. Khloe had to fight the urge to laugh. The clothes she owned could probably fit into one drawer in this mansion. Vanessa, the PR consultant, sat across from her and began explaining the situation with calm efficiency. “Your engagement announcement will be released later today,” she said. “It will appear in several online publications and business magazines.” Khloe nodded slowly. “Photos will follow this evening. There will also be a charity gala tomorrow night where you and Adrian will appear together for the first time publicly.” Khloe folded her hands together, listening carefully. Vanessa continued. “Most people will be curious about how you met. So we’ve prepared a simple story. You met through a charity foundation Adrian supports. You spent time working on one of their projects together, and the relationship developed naturally.” Khloe repeated the details in her head. Charity foundation. Project work. Natural relationship. “It sounded believable enough” She said nodding her head When spoken aloud, everything seemed simple. But living it felt entirely different. For the rest of the day the mansion was strangely busy. Tailors arrived with dresses. Jewelry boxes appeared on the table. Lillian moved around the room selecting shoes and outfits with confident certainty.
