Chapter 3

Chapter 3 That night I dreamt of the colour blue. It’s like waves of blue kept crashing over me, pulling me deeper into a sea of colour. The deeper I was pulled, the more I felt something stir inside of me. Something about the shades of blue thrilled me, enticed me and…turned me on? I could feel my confusion in my own dream but continued being sucked into pools of blue and gold. This blue abyss comforted me, called to me; I welcomed its presence. As more waves of colour washed over me, I could hear whispers and a whimpering. The whimpering sounded like it came from miles away, and I followed the sounds. I pushed through blue clouds and blue waters before I finally reached the source. There in front of me was a tiny little husky puppy. With beautiful grey fur and the most striking blue eyes. Just as I reached out to touch the guy, I was suddenly pulled from my dream. I groaned as the sun shone onto my face. I grabbed the pillow and pulled it over my face, wishing myself to fall back to sleep, mostly to dream-pet that puppy. I tried to make sense of what that dream could mean but I only managed to raise questions while erasing all chances of falling back asleep. I groaned once more as I get out of my bed, head pounding. A quick glance at my bed and I see Chels sleeping with her mouth open, drooling onto the pillow. I laugh to myself and get ready to go for a run. After a night of heavy drinking, I always found exercise to be the best remedy to clear my head and help the hangover pass. I must admit, I am fortunate to have a good metabolism. I do exercise, don’t get me wrong, but everyone has always asked me how I stay in shape when I can consume a whole elephant for dinner. I’m not stick thin, I’m curvier and more muscular than anything. I like to think part of it is my dedication to working out, and very good genes. Thanks mom and dad! Once my shoes are laced up, and headphones are on I head out into the cool morning air. Late summer and early fall were always my favourite time to run. It was the perfect temperature, and the crisp air felt nice as it filled my lungs. I did a quick stretch before I headed on my go-to hangover run. I made my way to the park and ravine by my apartment. It was the perfect place to run, easy on the joints and scenic. I loved when you could spot the signs of the changing seasons with the beautiful colours of the trees. I rounded the corner of the path and gave a warm smile as I passed a mother kissing her little ones scraped knee. It always pained me to see parents with their kids, it was something I never got to experience. My parents died in a house fire while my grandma and I were at this very park. No one and nothing survived, I only have a single photo of my mom holding me as a baby that Gigi had at her apartment. I loved Gigi, she gave me everything and more than I could have ever hoped or wished for, but I was still envious of anyone who was lucky enough to have their parents by their side through their lives. Suddenly I felt the odd sensations that I was being followed and a chill ran down my spine. I slowed my pace to check my surroundings, looking for someone or something watching me, but came up empty. I shook my head; I was probably still feeling the effects of the alcohol from last night. I continued deeper into the ravine when I heard rustling in the trees to my right. I stopped and face the sound. “Hello?” This was a great way to get murdered. Since the trees and bushes are inanimate objects, they obviously didn’t respond. It was probably a bunny or a squirrel, I mean I am running through a park, this is their home. I decided that I should probably head back home and get some food into my system, clearly my hunger was causing some sort of paranoia. I bent down to tie my shoe when I felt a whoosh of air pass me. I looked up and was met with familiar brilliant blue eyes. Immediately knots began to form in my stomach, how could this be possible? Standing right in front of me was the same dog from my dreams, only it was no longer a puppy. In fact, it was abnormally large, I’ve never seen a husky so big. On all fours, the dog still managed to reach just above my waist. I should be afraid, right? Yet something about this adorable dog drew me in. I mean, how could you not want to pet every dog you’ve ever come across? “Are you lost buddy?” I looked around, it didn’t seem like anyone was around, nor was anyone calling for their lost dog. The dog also didn’t have a leash or collar, but it would be strange for there to be a stray in the middle of this busy neighbourhood. “Come here you little floof ball, I won’t hurt you.” I bent down and reached my hand out to the giant dog. He, I’m assuming it’s a he, whimpered a little before coming closer, rubbing his head into my outstretched hand. His fur was incredibly soft, and surprisingly clean. Obviously, this meant that he belonged to someone right? “Wanna know something funny? I had a dream about a puppy that looked just like you?” I smiled as the dog seemed to enjoy my scratching behind his ear. He responded by licking my cheek. “I wish I could bring you home, but Gigi would kill me if I ever brought home a dog.” The husky huffed in response. His head suddenly snapped to look at something behind me. I turned to follow the dogs gaze and saw that same mother with her child walking up the path towards us. I turned back to the dog, but he was gone. I stood up, looking around for my furry friend. My chest began to feel heavy, and for some strange reason, I missed the dude. I tried to shake it off and decided to make my way back to the apartment, my hangover run not doing its usual job. I walk into my apartment and see Chels perched on the stool by the counter, sipping a steaming cup of coffee while chatting with Gigi. Gigi smiles as I enter and immediately goes to pour me a cup of coffee. “How was your run dear?” She smiles as she walks my coffee over to the spot beside Chels. “So strange, I saw an abnormally large husky by the ravine. There’s no wolves in this area, right?” The mug that was once in Gigi’s hands goes crashing to the floor, my poor coffee now splattered all over the floor, tainted with shards of glass. “You okay?” I walk over and put my hands on Gigi’s shoulders, studying her for any injuries. She shakes her head and forces a smile. “I’m fine honey, it just slipped.” “Signs you’re getting old,” Chelsea snickered as Gigi tossed her a look.  “But to answer your question Will, no, there’s no wolves in this area. Maybe it was a husky mixed with a larger breed.” She shrugged as she helped Gigi clean up the mess on the floor. “Yeah, I didn’t think there was wolves here.” I walked over to the cupboard and pulled out another mug, filling it with liquid life, or ‘coffee’ as most normal people call it. “You look surprisingly well, considering how drunk you were last night.” My eyes appraise Chelsea. He fiery hair is perfectly styled, not a single trace of sleepiness visible in her bright green eyes and her skin was glowing. Lucky b***h. “Maybe I can handle my liquor better than you,” She smiled smugly. “Or maybe you’re some superhuman freak, like a vampire or something, and have an incredibly high alcohol tolerance.” Her head suddenly snapped up, paling slightly. “It was a joke Chels, chill out,” I laughed at the shocked look on her face. After she gained composure she answered, “s**t Will, I didn’t want you to find out like this. I suck your blood when you’re sleeping too.” “You know I’d let you do that while I’m awake, right? As long as you promise to turn me into a vampire too and introduce me to hot vampire guys.” I wiggle my eyebrows at her. “You wouldn’t want to be a vampire,” her nose wrinkles in disgust. “Hey, maybe that sexy guy from last night was a vampire. Maybe that’s why he kept calling me ‘mate’,” I suggested. Once again, the poor mug in Gigi’s hand goes crashing to the floor. I look up at her from my seat, her face as white as snow. I quickly jumped up and made my way to her, holding her up slightly. “Gigi, are you okay?” “I didn’t sleep well last night, I think I’m just a bit tired, let’s go sit in the living room and you can tell me all about this mystery man,” the corners of her mouth turn up into a slight smile, but I can tell its forced. She seems genuinely worried about something, her eyes riddled with fear. “What did this man look like?” She tries to ask casually, taking a shaky sip of her coffee, keeping her eyes on me. “Tall, muscular, like a Greek God,” I shrugged. Sexy. Enchanting. Just the memory of him made my insides turn. “Interesting. And you…felt nothing?” “What do you mean?” I furrowed my brows at her strange question. What does anyone feel when meeting a complete stranger? “You know, were you interested in him?” “Oh, um, I don’t think so. I was more confused by the whole ‘mate’ thing.” Though she tried to hide it, I noticed Gigi’s slight wince at the mention of ‘mate’. “I was definitely interested in him, he was stunning. But the whole ‘mate’ thing threw me off,” Chels added. Chelsea and Gigi shared a look I couldn’t quite understand. “Whatever, it’s not the first time we had a weird encounter on a night out. I’m sure it won’t be the last. I doubt we’ll ever see that guy again.” I shrugged. “Let’s hope not,” Gigi muttered. “Sorry Gigi, this coffee is not strong enough for how much my head hurts. Will, let’s go to Cynthia’s café up the road.” Chels grabbed her things and headed towards the door. I kissed my grandma on the cheek and followed her out. “I sure hope the cute barista is working. What’s his name again? Kyle? Kevin? Kenny?” “Do you mean Patrick?” I laugh. “Yes! I was close.” She links her arm with mine as we make our way to the café.
