Chapter 21

She never expected to be touched by him in that manner. The memory of their wedding night kept flooding back, and she found it hard to believe it was the same man. “Should I go in and check on her, sir?” Maria asked, bowing slightly to Xavier. They stood in front of Jade’s room. “No,” he said dismissively. All they could hear were screams and crashing sounds. For a week now, she had been breaking everything in the house, and he kept replacing it. The door suddenly flung open. “Where are the cleaners?” Jade asked, one hand on her waist. “I’ll get them,” Maria quickly bowed and rushed off. Xavier looked at her, unsure of what he was seeing. She looked completely different. Jade didn’t spare him a glance as she walked back into the room. Two cleaners followed behind her shortly after. “You’re all so incompetent! I’ll get your heads chopped off if I step on the smallest piece of glass!” she warned. “We’re sorry,” they chorused quickly. “Do you have any other option?” she rolled her eyes. “Hurry and clean my room. And don’t you dare steal from my room, you poor things! Everything here costs more than your lives!” She stormed out but stopped right in front of her husband. She looked up at him. “I don’t like the décor in my room. It’s cheap and local. I want something expensive and glamorous,” she stated. “Also, I want to buy more jewelry—expensive ones—and I want to pick them myself. So get me your best designers.” Then she walked past him. Xavier turned to look at her. Ambitious, yes. Rude as well. He had never seen this side of her before. And he didn’t like it. With a slight frown, he picked up his phone. “Maria!” he called. “Yes, sir?” Maria answered quickly from the kitchen. “Get me my smoothie,” Jade commanded as she sat on the kitchen island. Maria obeyed and placed it in front of her. Jade took one sip and spat it out immediately. “What the hell is this?” she snapped. Maria flinched. “M-ma’am… I…I did what you said,” she replied, head bowed. “Is this the recipe I gave you?” Jade slammed the cup on the table. “I’m s-sorry,” Maria said quickly, tears filling her eyes. “I’ll never do it again.” “Why is there too much sweetener in my smoothie, Maria?” Jade asked sharply. “Did you plan to kill me?” “No!” Maria dropped to her knees. “Please, I’m sorry!” “You wretched piece of worthless trash!” Jade splashed the smoothie onto her. “You never get anything right!” “Jade,” Xavier called from the doorway. “Get up!” Jade snapped at Maria, who quickly obeyed. “Clean this mess. Don’t make me repeat myself. And clean yourself too. We’re going to the mall.” Jade walked out of the kitchen, ignoring Xavier. “Jade,” he followed her. “You want to come to the mall too?” she turned back. “I don’t want to be bored, so come with me, okay?” She smiled—and he could tell it was fake. “What you’re doing…” “What am I doing, dear husband?” Jade gave him a cold look. “Haven’t seen you in a while. Are you coming or not?” “I have work…” “Of course.” She turned to leave, but he grabbed her arm. Jade flinched and immediately pulled away from his touch. Fear flashed across her face before she could hide it. It was clear—she was afraid of him. “I’ll come,” he said quietly. “Good. And my jewelry?” “They’ll be delivered,” he replied. Xavier and Jade went to the mall. He didn’t enjoy it much because she barely paid attention to him. Jade kept scanning the area, spotting some of his men at a distance—and Raquel too. “Did they have to come?” she asked him. “Yes.” “I thought we were having ‘us’ time,” she added. “I need to ensure your safety.” “So you’re saying you can’t protect me?” she teased. A small smile formed on his lips. But suddenly, gunshots rang out. Xavier instantly pulled out his gun and pushed Jade behind him. “What is happening?” Jade asked, terrified. Raquel jogged toward them. “His men are here. We’ll handle it. Please stay here,” she said before running off with pistols in both hands. “Whose men?” Jade asked. “Don’t worry about it. Stay with Maria,” he ordered. Maria trembled behind Jade. Screams filled the mall as people ran in panic. “But Raquel said you should stay here,” Jade whispered. “I’m going with you. You’re not leaving me here.” More gunshots echoed—and suddenly, a man appeared in front of them with a gun. “Oh my God! I’m gonna die!” Jade screamed. The man fired—but Xavier was faster. He shot him down immediately. Jade’s breath caught as she saw Xavier clutch his arm. “You’ve been shot!” she rushed to him. “I’m fine,” he said, though blood was already soaking his sleeve. “Raquel!” Jade called urgently. Raquel returned moments later. “All threats eliminated, sir,” she reported. “You’ve been hit.” She supported Xavier, placing his uninjured arm over her shoulders. “I can walk perfectly fine on my own,” he said, removing her hand. “Stop overreacting.” Jade watched as the doctor treated his arm. “He’ll be fine. It’s not serious—just rest,” the doctor said. “I’ll walk you out,” Raquel said, leaving with him. Carrie sat beside Xavier on the bed. “Of course this happens when you’re around Jade. Are you really that bad luck?” she said, touching his arm. “Get up,” Jade ordered. Carrie paused. “Me?” “You. Get the f**k up,” Jade repeated. “Get your ass off my husband’s bed!” “Or else what?” Carrie smiled. “You’re banned from entering his room again,” Jade said firmly. “If you need to speak to my husband, do it in the office. And if you come here, don’t step into our room again.” Carrie chuckled. “Oh, so now you’re playing wife? Last time I checked, this wasn’t your room. You have your own.” “Well, that will change because I’m moving into my husband’s room today,” Jade blurted out. She froze slightly after saying it. Carrie glanced at Xavier briefly. “I don’t want to see you here again,” Jade continued. “Understood? Or do I need to take measures?” When Xavier said nothing, Carrie picked up her purse and left. “I’m getting a new roommate?” Xavier asked weakly, a faint smile forming. “How did I not know about that?” “Don’t pretend like you don’t like it,” Jade rolled her eyes. “Oh, I’m not complaining,” he said, watching her. Jade turned to leave. “Jade,” he called immediately. “You’re going to leave me after kicking my friend out? How is that fair?” But Jade ignored him and slammed the door behind her.
