Jade sat in the boat as far away from Xavier as possible while she paddled. A little guilt gnawed at her because she hadn't offered him any food that morning, and he hadn't asked for any either. He hadn't even slept in the tent. He'd spent the entire night out in the cold. She glanced over her shoulder and frowned. He looked worse. Much worse. His lips had turned a faint shade of purple, dry and cracked, and the color seemed to have drained from his face. The anger he'd stirred in her the previous night was still fresh, so she stubbornly kept her mouth shut. They camped by the river again when darkness swallowed the land. This time, Xavier slept inside the tent. Jade woke sometime in the middle of the night when she heard strange noises. At first, she thought it was an animal.
