Chapter 13: Unraveling Secrets
Dynamite, Prisca, Alex, and Luna huddled together in the cramped closet, holding their breath as Ryder's footsteps echoed outside. They had been gathering evidence for weeks, trying to uncover the truth about Ryder's shady dealings, but every lead seemed to end in a dead-end.
"I don't understand," Prisca whispered, her voice barely audible. "We've been over every inch of his office, every file, every email. There has to be something we're missing."
Alex nodded, his eyes scanning the room. "I think I know what it is. I've been going over the financials, and I think I found a discrepancy. A small one, but it could be the key to unraveling everything."
Luna's eyes lit up. "What is it?"
Alex hesitated. "I'm not entirely sure yet. But I think it has something to do with a shell company Ryder set up a few months ago. If we can get access to those records, we might be able to find the proof we need."
Dynamite's eyes locked onto Alex's. "Can you get us that access?"
Alex nodded. "I'll try. But we need to be careful. Ryder has eyes and ears everywhere. If he finds out what we're doing..."
Prisca's hand on Dynamite's arm tightened. "We'll be careful. We have to be."
As they continued to strategize, the closet door creaked open, and Ryder's smirk appeared. "Well, well, well. What do we have here?"
Dynamite's heart raced as Ryder's eyes scanned the room, inches from their hiding spot. He knew they had to act fast, or risk being discovered...
Ryder's eyes narrowed, his gaze lingering on each of them. "What are you all doing in here? This is a private meeting room."
Dynamite stepped forward, trying to sound nonchalant. "We were just looking for a quiet place to discuss a project. We didn't mean to intrude."
Ryder's smirk grew wider. "A project, huh? Well, I hope it's not a project to take me down. Because that would be a very bad idea."
Prisca's eyes flashed with anger, but Dynamite shot her a warning glance. They couldn't afford to antagonize Ryder, not yet.
"Of course not," Dynamite said, forcing a smile. "We're all on the same team here."
Ryder chuckled. "I'm not so sure about that. But I'll let it slide... for now. Just remember, I'm watching you all."
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving the four of them breathing a collective sigh of relief.
"That was close," Luna whispered.
"Too close," Alex agreed. "We need to be more careful."
Dynamite nodded. "We will be. But we can't back down now. We have to keep pushing forward."
Prisca's eyes locked onto his. "We will. Together."
But as they left the closet and went their separate ways, Dynamite couldn't shake the feeling that they were running out of time...
