CHAPTER 4 Raleigh's ReduxIt wasn’t a hole but a trap door with a latch built into it. Zorn pushed it up, using a bolt anchored into one of the beams to hold it in place. The door was made out of wood, and he was sure that one of the soldiers would shoot into it, shredding him, or smash it open and jump inside, but all he heard were their shrieks as the monsters tore them to pieces. He and Gertrude cowered until the last of the squeals and grunts subsided, then he said, “Are you okay, Gertrude?” Pause. “Yes.” Yellow light filtered in through the cracks in the trap door, and they could only see a few feet in front of them, but Zorn was certain that this was their tunnel, the one they’d used to escape years before, the one that led to the secret room under their dorm.
