Episode 15 — The Passenger

Daniel couldn't breathe. Someone was sitting behind him. He didn't turn around immediately. His fingers tightened around the phone. “Elena.” She was staring straight ahead. Her face was white. “Don't move,” she whispered. Daniel swallowed. “Who's behind me?” “I don't know.” “That isn't an answer.” The figure said nothing. Rain struck the roof of the car. Daniel slowly turned his head. The back seat was dark. For a moment, he saw only a silhouette. Then lightning flashed outside. Daniel saw a face. And everything inside him stopped. “No.” The figure leaned forward. Daniel's heart slammed against his chest. It was a woman. Her hair was wet. Her face was pale. But Daniel knew that face. He had spent seven years looking at photographs of it. Seven years wondering where she had gone. Seven years believing he would never see her again. “Maya?” Elena made a broken sound. The woman in the back seat didn't answer. Daniel turned completely toward her. “Maya.” The woman looked at him. Her eyes were filled with something Daniel couldn't understand. Fear. Or recognition. Then she whispered— “Don't say my name.” Daniel froze. Elena suddenly unlocked the car doors. “What are you doing?” Daniel shouted. “We have to get out.” The woman behind him grabbed Daniel's shoulder. “Don't.” Daniel looked back at her. Her hand was trembling. “Who are you?” The woman stared at him. Daniel's chest tightened. “You look like her.” Elena whispered, “Daniel, listen to me.” But he ignored her. “You have her voice.” The woman pulled her hand away. “You need to leave.” Daniel stared at her. “Where is Maya?” The woman's expression changed. A long silence filled the car. Then she looked at Elena. “Elena hasn't told you.” Daniel turned sharply. “What hasn't she told me?” Elena's eyes closed. Outside, a car door slammed. All three of them froze. The woman in the back seat leaned forward. “They found us.” Daniel looked through the windshield. The blocked vehicle was still there. But now its doors were open. Empty. His phone buzzed. Daniel looked down. GET OUT. NOW. Daniel grabbed the door handle. Elena caught his arm. “Wait.” “For what?” She reached into her coat. Daniel watched her carefully. She pulled out a small key. Old. Silver. The woman in the back seat immediately reacted. “Where did you get that?” Elena looked at her. “Maya gave it to me.” Daniel's breath caught. The woman went silent. Daniel looked between them. “You both keep saying that.” Elena held the key tightly. “Because it's true.” “Then prove it.” Elena looked toward the dark warehouse at the end of the street. Daniel followed her gaze. The warehouse. The same place the mysterious messages had been leading them toward. “This key opens something inside.” Daniel frowned. “What?” Elena hesitated. Then she said— “A locker.” Daniel stared at her. “And?” Elena's voice became quieter. “Maya left something there.” The woman in the back seat suddenly shook her head. “No.” Elena turned. “You know about it?” The woman looked away. Daniel's mind raced. “Who are you?” Before anyone could answer, the car shook violently. A loud impact struck the rear. Elena screamed. Daniel turned. Another vehicle had stopped directly behind them. Blocking them completely. The headlights of the front vehicle switched off. Darkness swallowed the street. Daniel's phone buzzed. He looked down. One message. THE PERSON IN THE BACK SEAT IS NOT MAYA. Daniel slowly raised his eyes. The woman was gone. The back seat was empty. Daniel spun around. “What—?” The rear door opened. Cold rain rushed inside. Daniel stared into the darkness. The woman was running toward the warehouses. “Maya!” he shouted. She stopped. For one second, she turned back. Daniel couldn't see her face clearly. But he heard her voice. “Daniel!” Then someone grabbed her from the darkness. She disappeared. Daniel threw open his door. “Daniel, no!” Elena shouted. He ran into the rain. Behind him, Elena screamed his name. Ahead, Daniel saw movement between the warehouses. He ran faster. “Maya!” No answer. His phone buzzed. Daniel almost dropped it. A new message appeared. YOU FINALLY FOUND THE WRONG PERSON. Daniel stopped. Rain poured over him. Then he heard footsteps behind him. Slow. Close. Daniel turned. The man in the black coat stood at the entrance to the alley. This time, Daniel could see his face. And he recognized him. Not from the funeral. Not from the photographs. From Maya's disappearance. The night Daniel had received her final call. The man looked directly at him. Then he said— “You should have listened to your sister.” Daniel's phone buzzed one final time. He looked down. A photograph had arrived. It showed Maya. Alive. And beneath the photograph were four words: SHE NEVER LEFT THE CITY.
