Episode 23 — The Second Key

Daniel stared at the hands around him.
Rain continued falling through the narrow passage.
Nobody spoke.
The message on his phone remained open.
LOOK AT THEIR HANDS.
Daniel's eyes moved from one person to another.
Elena's hands were empty.
Marcus had both hands at his sides.
Nathan's right hand was inside his coat.
Sarah stood perfectly still.
Then Daniel saw it.
A small flash of silver.
His breath caught.
“Marcus.”
Marcus looked at him.
Daniel pointed.
“What are you holding?”
For the first time, Marcus looked confused.
Then he slowly opened his hand.
Daniel's stomach tightened.
A second silver key rested in his palm.
Elena stepped backward.
“No.”
Maya stared at Marcus.
“You have one too?”
Marcus looked at the key.
His expression had changed.
“I didn't know I had this.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You didn't know?”
Marcus looked up.
“I mean, I didn't know what it was.”
Daniel took a step toward him.
“Where did you get it?”
Marcus remained silent.
Daniel's voice hardened.
“Where?”
Marcus looked toward Nathan.
Nathan immediately shook his head.
“Don't look at me.”
Daniel turned.
“Then you know.”
Nathan's face tightened.
“I know what the keys are for.”
Daniel held up the key he had been given.
“Then explain.”
Sarah suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
“You still think there are only two keys.”
Silence.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
Sarah folded her arms.
“There were three.”
Maya's face went pale.
Nathan looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“Three keys?”
Sarah nodded.
“One for Robert.”
Daniel's grip tightened around his father's key.
“One for the person he trusted.”
Her eyes moved toward Marcus.
Marcus's expression changed.
“And one for the person he should never have trusted.”
Daniel slowly turned toward Sarah.
“Which one are you?”
Sarah smiled.
“That is a better question than you realize.”
Maya stepped closer to Daniel.
“Don't listen to her.”
Sarah's smile disappeared.
“You're still afraid of me.”
Maya looked at her.
“I remember enough.”
Daniel turned toward his sister.
“What do you remember?”
Maya hesitated.
Her eyes moved toward the second phone.
“The keys.”
Daniel waited.
She swallowed.
“My father showed me something.”
Daniel's heart stopped.
“Our father?”
Maya nodded.
“He showed me three keys.”
Daniel looked at Marcus's hand.
Then his own.
“Where was the third?”
Maya closed her eyes.
“I don't remember.”
Sarah's expression became cold.
“Yes, you do.”
Maya opened her eyes.
Sarah took one step forward.
Daniel immediately moved between them.
“Don't.”
Sarah stopped.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel's phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
THE THIRD KEY IS WITH THE BETRAYER.
Daniel felt his heartbeat quicken.
He looked around again.
Someone here had it.
Or had hidden it.
His father's video played again in his mind.
The person standing closest to you right now is the person who betrayed us.
Daniel looked toward Maya.
She was beside him.
Closest.
His stomach tightened.

He immediately pushed the thought away.
It was exactly what the messages wanted.
To make him suspicious of everyone.
Even her.
Maya noticed his expression.
“What?”
Daniel locked his phone.
“Nothing.”
She stared at him.
“Daniel.”
Before he could answer, Nathan suddenly turned toward the street.
“Someone's coming.”
Marcus looked toward the alley entrance.
Daniel heard it too.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Approaching.
Sarah smiled faintly.
“You're too late.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“For what?”
She didn't answer.
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared at the entrance.
Then another.
Daniel's body went tense.
Maya grabbed his arm.
“Don't let them take me.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I won't.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“We need another exit.”
Marcus pointed behind them.
“There's a service door.”
Elena frowned.
“It's locked.”
Marcus looked at the second key.
Daniel understood.
“That's what it opens.”
Nathan immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Marcus looked at him.
“What?”
“Don't open that door.”
Daniel's patience snapped.
“Why not?”
Nathan looked directly at him.
“Because your father told me never to.”
Daniel stared.
“My father told you?”
Nathan nodded.
“He said the door should only be opened when all three keys were together.”
Daniel looked down at his key.
Then Marcus's.
Sarah smiled.
“You're still missing one.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“Where is it?”
Sarah's expression became unreadable.
“That's what Maya was supposed to remember.”
Maya stepped backward.
Daniel immediately turned toward her.
“Maya?”
She was staring at Sarah.
Her breathing had become shallow.
“No.”
Elena moved closer.
“Maya, look at me.”
Maya shook her head.
“No.”
Sarah spoke softly.
“Think about the room.”
Maya covered her ears.
“Stop.”
Daniel stepped toward Sarah.
“I said stop.”
Sarah ignored him.
“There was a chair.”
Maya's eyes closed.
“There was a table.”
“Sarah!”
Daniel's voice echoed through the passage.
But Sarah continued.
“And there was a little box.”
Maya suddenly gasped.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
Maya opened her eyes.
The confusion on her face was gone.
For one second, she looked certain.
“The box.”
Sarah smiled.
Maya looked at Daniel.
“There was a box under the floor.”
Daniel's heart pounded.
“Where?”
Maya shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“The room.”
Maya turned toward him.
Nathan's expression had changed.
“The room had a symbol on the wall.”
Maya stared at him.
“You've been there.”
Nathan went silent.
Daniel felt anger rise.
“You told me you didn't know.”
Nathan looked at him.
“I said I didn't know where she was.”
Maya laughed bitterly.
“But you knew the room.”
Nathan looked away.
Daniel grabbed his coat.
“What did you do?”
Nathan didn't fight him.
His voice was quiet.
“I was there the first night.”
Daniel froze.
Maya stared at Nathan.
“You left me there.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Daniel released him.
The silence was worse than an answer.
“You left my sister there?”
Nathan looked directly at Daniel.
“I thought she would be safe.”
Daniel stepped back.
Safe.
The word sounded disgusting.
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
Sarah smiled again.
“Now you're finally seeing him.”
Marcus suddenly moved toward Sarah.
“Enough.”
Sarah looked at him.
Marcus raised the second key.
“You want this?”
Sarah's eyes moved to it.
“Yes.”
Daniel noticed.
The moment Marcus lifted the key, Sarah changed.
She wanted it.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why?”
Sarah didn't answer.
Marcus smiled faintly.
“You've been following us for the key.”
Sarah's expression hardened.
“Give it to me.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
The two figures behind Sarah stepped forward.
Daniel moved toward Maya.
Nathan moved toward Elena.
Everything happened at once.
Sarah raised one hand.
The figures stopped.
She looked directly at Marcus.
“You have no idea what that key opens.”
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Do you?”
Daniel looked down at his father's key.
Then at the second phone.
Suddenly, Maya grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
Her face had gone pale again.
“What?”
She pointed toward the second phone.
The screen was lit.
Daniel hadn't touched it.
A new message was appearing.
Not on his phone.
On Maya's.
Everyone watched.
The words appeared slowly.
THE THIRD KEY IS ALREADY HERE.
Daniel looked around.
Nobody moved.
Then another message appeared.
CHECK MAYA'S COAT.
Maya froze.
Daniel looked at her.
“Maya?”
She shook her head.
“I don't know what they're talking about.”
Sarah's eyes widened.
For the first time that night, she looked genuinely afraid.
Nathan whispered—
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Nathan took a step backward.
“Maya, don't move.”
Maya's face tightened.
“Why?”
Nathan stared at her coat.
Daniel slowly reached toward Maya.
She grabbed his wrist.
“Daniel.”
He stopped.
“I need to know.”
She looked into his eyes.
Then slowly released his hand.
Daniel reached inside the pocket of her coat.
His fingers touched something cold.
Metal.
He pulled it out.
The third silver key.
Nobody spoke.
Maya stared at it.
“I've never seen that before.”
Daniel looked at Sarah.
Her face had gone completely still.
Then Daniel's phone buzzed.
A final message appeared.
NOW YOU KNOW WHO THEY WERE HIDING.
Daniel frowned.
Before he could understand, another message arrived.
THE KEY WAS NOT HIDDEN FROM MAYA.
Daniel's blood turned cold.
The final words appeared.
IT WAS HIDDEN ON HER.
Daniel slowly looked at Nathan.
Then Marcus.
Then Elena.
Someone had placed the key in Maya's coat.
And somehow—
Maya had never known.
