Episode 4 — The Voice

289 Words
Daniel spun around. The flashlight beam swept across the hallway. Nothing. His heart hammered against his ribs. “Who's there?” Silence. Then— “Daniel.” The voice came again. This time from the kitchen. Daniel stepped backward until his shoulder touched the wall. It sounded familiar. Not completely. But enough to make his stomach tighten. He raised the flashlight. “Show yourself.” A shadow moved across the kitchen doorway. Daniel froze. His phone buzzed. He looked down. DON'T LET HIM SEE YOU. Daniel's eyes lifted slowly. Him? The kitchen light suddenly flashed once. Twice. Then darkness returned. Daniel heard footsteps. He moved toward the living-room window, keeping his eyes on the doorway. Another step. Closer. His fingers found the emergency number on his phone. Before he could press it, a hand grabbed his shoulder. Daniel shouted and turned. No one was there. The flashlight fell from his hand. It hit the floor and rolled beneath the sofa. The apartment became completely dark. Then Daniel heard a door slam. He dropped to his knees and reached beneath the sofa. His fingers touched the flashlight. He pulled it out and switched it on. The hallway was empty. The kitchen was empty. But the front door stood open. Cold air drifted into the apartment. Daniel knew he had locked it. On the floor, just inside the doorway, was a small object. A key. Daniel picked it up. Attached to it was a faded metal tag. He turned it over. An address was engraved on the back. Daniel read it once. Then again. His blood ran cold. He knew that address. It was the place Maya had been seen last. His phone buzzed. One final message appeared. Go there alone.
