Eve and Liam made their way back to the pack's territory under the cover of darkness, their footsteps muffled by the thick woodland floor. Eve's mind was spinning from what Liam had just disclosed, and there was tension in the air. She could see her life falling apart in before of her eyes, turning into a maze of dangers and secrets that she was only now starting to figure out. The sight of the familiar homes tucked away among the trees still disturbed her when they got closer to the pack's settlement. The once comforting sounds of the pack’s night-time routine—the distant chatter, the crackling of fires—now seemed ominous, hiding threats she hadn’t noticed before.
Just before they came out of the woods, Liam stopped and turned to look at Eve. His eyes were searching the area as though they were ready for an ambush at any time, and his expression was solemn. He said in a low voice, "You need to be careful from now on.". Don't put too much faith in people. Not everyone in the pack is loyal.”
Eve’s stomach churned at his words. The idea that her own pack could be hiding enemies was almost too much to bear. She nodded silently, her resolve hardening. She couldn’t afford to be naive anymore. Not with so much at stake.
They continued towards the central cabin, where Eve knew Uncle Marcus would be waiting. She knew she had to remain composed even though she was filled with a lot of questions for him and was also feeling very angry and confused. Liam was correct; she could no longer afford the luxury of trust.
The long shadows on the wooden walls were created by the fireplace's warm light as they entered the cabin. Uncle Marcus stood with a worried expression by the fireplace. He looked up as they entered, his eyes lingering on Eve before flicking to Liam with a silent question.
“She knows,” Liam said simply, his voice devoid of any emotion.
Uncle Marcus sighed heavily, rubbing his hand over his tired face. “Eve, I—”
“You should have told me,” Eve cut him off, her voice sharper than she intended. “You should have told me everything.”
“I wanted to protect you,” Uncle Marcus replied, his tone weary. “Your parents…they wanted you to have a normal life, away from the dangers they faced. I tried to honor that wish.”
“But keeping me in the dark didn’t protect me,” Eve shot back, her emotions finally spilling over. “It just left me vulnerable.”
Silently standing near the door, Liam's presence served as a stable grounding force amidst the tumultuous emotions whirling around the space. Uncle Marcus had a hurt expression on his face. “I know, Eve. I know. And for that, I’m very sorry. But I had hoped that by keeping you safe here, we could avoid the fate your parents faced.”
“What fate?” Eve asked, her voice trembling with the weight of the question. “What really happened to them?”
Uncle Marcus hesitated, his gaze flicking to Liam as if seeking permission. Liam gave a slight nod, and Uncle Marcus sighed again, his shoulders slumping as he prepared to finally reveal the truth.
“They were betrayed,” Uncle Marcus said, echoing Liam’s earlier words. “By someone within the pack. Your father’s vision for unity threatened the power dynamics that had kept the packs separate for generations. He wanted peace, but others saw it as a weakness. They feared he would weaken our pack’s standing among the others.”
Eve's heart ached as she listened, the picture of her parents' gentle, kind spirits that she had carried for so long now tarnished by their hard lives. "Who turned on them?" she questioned, her voice hardly audible above a whisper.
Uncle Marcus shook his head. "We cannot say for sure. There were numerous people against your father, and the betrayal was well planned. Undoubtedly, there exist individuals who maintain the belief that vision poses a threat and will do whatever it takes to ensure it perishes along with you.
Eve had a chilly chill down her back. “And Killian? Where does he fit into all of this?”
Liam stepped forward, his expression darkening at the mention of Killian’s name. “Killian is ambitious, always has been. He’s aligned himself with those who oppose your father’s vision. He sees you as a pawn, a means to consolidate power. If he can control you, he can control the future of the packs.”
Eve clenched her fists, anger bubbling up inside her. She had been nothing more than a tool to these people, her life and future decided by forces beyond her control. But not anymore. She wouldn’t let them use her. She wouldn’t let them win.
“What do we do now?” Eve asked, her voice stronger than before, determination edging out the fear.
Liam and Uncle Marcus exchanged a look, one filled with unspoken understanding. “We fight,” Liam said simply. “But we do it smart. Who else is involved, whom we can trust, and how to turn the tide in our favor are the things we need to ascertain. Uncle Marcus's protective nature took over and he continued, "And we need to keep you safe." “You’re the key to all of this, Eve. They won’t stop until they have you.”
With her thoughts buzzing about the possible outcomes of their scheme, Eve nodded. She knew there was no other option, no matter how dangerous it was. She needed to take charge of her own future and fight for the life she truly wanted, rather than accepting other people's opinions on what sort of life she deserves to lead.
However, as she prepared for the impending battle, a persistent doubt tore at the back of her thoughts. Could she really trust Liam and Uncle Marcus? Or were they just using her too, in their own subtle way?
Only time would tell. For now, though, all she could do was keep going and embrace the strength she knew she would need to live. Since Eve was determined not to let the shadows of the past consume her, they were drawing near.
