Approaching the southern border, Eve, Liam, and a select group of the pack's reliable fighters felt the air thick with tense energy. The usually lively forest was unusually silent, adding to Eve's heightened senses with each rustle of leaves or c***k of a twig. She had never felt so vulnerable and exposed, but an intense determination burned within her.
Liam led the group, standing tall with eyes keen like a predator's. Eve stayed near, tightly holding the knife he had given her. She sensed the heft of the weapon, a warning of the perilous situation ahead.
The southern border was the pack’s most exposed area, a natural vulnerability that Killian had previously taken advantage of. Liam had always fortified it with extra guards, but if Killian had launched an attack there, it meant he was getting bolder, more aggressive.
Upon nearing the border, the trees thinned out, exposing a spacious clearing where the pack's fighters had gathered. The scene that Eve witnessed was simultaneously terrifying and breathtaking. The soldiers, dressed in combat attire, were ready and resolute in their stances. They were prepared for battle, ready to protect their area and Alpha.
Liam addressed the warriors, his voice carrying over the clearing. “Killian has made his move. He knows about Eve, and he’s trying to provoke us. But we won’t let him. We will defend our land and our people, with everything we have.”
A murmur of approval echoed through the audience, and the warriors' eyes shone with passionate allegiance. Eve felt a thrill of pride for their solidarity, as well as a twinge of terror. This was real. People would get hurt, or worse, because of her.
Liam turned to Eve, his expression softening just slightly. “Stay close to me. We don’t know what Killian has planned, but he’s not getting his hands on you.”
Eve nodded, swallowing her fear. “I’m ready.”
“Let’s hope you are,” Liam replied, though his tone was more protective than doubtful.
The troop proceeded slowly, spreading out along the boundary to cover as much ground as possible. Eve's heart hammered in her chest as she followed Liam, every muscle in her body strained for the impending clash.
As they arrived at the border of the open space, the thick forest continued. The spaces among the trees appeared to alter and change, deceiving Eve's eyes. She made an attempt to concentrate and maintain steady breathing, but the excitement was overwhelming.
A sudden movement caught her eye: a quick, shadowy figure moving through the trees. Eve held her breath, trying hard to see what it was. Was it an animal? Or something more sinister?
She whispered "Liam," her voice barely able to be heard.
Liam turned, following her gaze. He saw it too—the shadowy figure moving through the trees, too fast to be human.
“It’s him,” Liam said, his voice low and dangerous. “Stay behind me.”
Before Eve could respond, a tall, imposing man with a merciless frown on his face emerged from the shadows and revealed himself. His eyes blazed with wickedness as he stood there in all-black attire.
"Alpha Liam," the man said disdainfully. “I didn’t expect you to bring the girl out to play. How thoughtful.”
Eve’s blood ran cold as she realized who it was. This was Killian—the man who had been hunting her, the one who saw her as nothing more than a tool for his gain.
Liam’s expression hardened, his muscles tensing. “This ends now, Killian. You’re not getting anywhere near her.”
Killian chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down Eve’s spine. “Oh, Liam. Why are you always so dramatic when we both know how this will end? Why prolong the inevitable?”
Eve felt the dark, suffocating force emanating from Killian; it made her want to flee and hide but she couldn't. Not now. She had to stand her ground, had to show Liam—and herself—that she wasn’t weak.
Liam took a step forward, placing himself directly between Eve and Killian. “You’re outnumbered, Killian. Leave now, and maybe I’ll let you live.”
Killian’s smile widened, his eyes flashing with amusement. “You always were one for empty threats, Liam. But I’m not here for a fight. Not yet, anyway.”
Eve’s heart skipped a beat. What was he planning?
Killian explained that he just wanted to lay eyes on Eve for himself. He wanted to see the girl who was responsible for all the commotion. He admitted that he was disappointed because he expected more.
Eve’s hands tightened around the knife, anger flaring up inside her. How dare he dismiss her like that? But before she could react, Liam spoke again, his voice cold and lethal.
“You’ve seen her. Now leave.”
Killian remained still, moving closer and fixing his gaze on Eve. "Inform me, young Luna," he spoke softly, his tone carrying a sinister edge. “Do you even know what you are? What you could be?”
Eve shivered slightly, but she made herself maintain eye contact. "I have sufficient knowledge."
Killian chuckled quietly, while shaking his head. "You truly lack comprehension, don't you?"
The power you hold... it’s wasted on you.”
Eve’s pulse quickened, fear mixing with anger. “I’m not afraid of you.”
“You should be,” Killian replied, his smile fading. “Because when I take what’s mine, you’ll wish you had been.”
Liam’s patience snapped. “Enough!” he growled, stepping forward threateningly. “You’re done here, Killian. Get out, or I’ll make you.”
Killian's demeanor turned stern, his previously mocking gaze now gone. The tension in the atmosphere became almost tangible, and the possibility of violence loomed over them like a dark cloud. Surprisingly, Killian stepped back, never breaking eye contact with Eve. "I'll depart," he stated calmly. "But this is not the conclusion. When I return, you will regret not taking my advise." Eve exhaled sharply as she witnessed Killian vanishing into the thick forest, leaving silence in its wake.
Liam faced her, his expression impossible to interpret. "Is everything okay?" he asked with a softer tone.
Eve gave a small nod, even though she wasn't feeling alright. Her mind was racing, filled with questions and doubts. What had Killian meant? What power was he talking about? What was making her feel like she was about to experience something terrible?
Liam appeared to notice her anxiety and softly placed his hand on her shoulder, giving her a feeling of comfort. "He's trying to manipulate your thoughts."
Don't let him." Eve glanced up at him, seeking reassurance in his eyes. “What if he’s telling the truth? What if I don’t know what I am?”
Liam’s grip tightened slightly, his gaze intense. "Eve, you have more strength than you realize. Have confidence in yourself. Especially at this moment."
Eve wished to place her trust in him, yet anxiety and doubt continued to trouble her. She softly murmured, "What if I'm unable to handle this?" Liam's demeanor became gentler, and a seldom-seen tenderness filled his gaze. "You're not facing this alone. We'll find a solution together. But for now, you must have faith in me." Can you do that?”
Eve nodded slowly, feeling the weight of his words settling in. Trust. It was a simple word, yet it held great significance. Could she truly rely on Liam, have faith in herself?
She said she would make an attempt, her voice trembling slightly.
Liam gave her a soft, comforting smile. “That’s all I’m requesting.”
The sound of footsteps approaching interrupted the moment between them. A tall, stern-looking man with a deep scar across his face, one of the pack’s warriors, appeared. He bowed slightly to Liam before speaking.
“Alpha, we’ve secured the border. There’s no sign of any other intruders.”
Liam nodded, his demeanor shifting back to that of the strong, commanding leader. “Good. Keep a close watch. If Killian makes another move, I want to know about it immediately.”
The warrior nodded and left to carry out his orders, leaving Liam and Eve alone once again.
“We should get back,” Liam said, turning to Eve. “It’s not safe out here.”
Eve hesitated, glancing back at the trees where Killian had disappeared. “Do you think he’ll really come back?”
Liam’s expression darkened. “He will. And when he does, we’ll be ready.”
Eve nodded, though the fear in her chest hadn’t lessened. As they journeyed back to the pack’s territory, her thoughts were filled with Killian’s foreboding words as she trailed behind Liam.
While walking, Eve couldn't rid herself of the sense that an ominous and dreadful event was approaching. She was unaware of what it might be, but she understood the importance of being prepared for it. She needed to exhibit strength, for both herself and the pack.
Arriving at the safety of the pack’s settlement, Eve found herself questioning her strength in the face of unknown dangers. Her confidence faltered as she grappled with the uncertainty, making her doubt her readiness for the upcoming battle. While gazing at the serene night sky, Eve sensed that the stars were mocking her internal conflict. She whispered "Liam," with her voice trembling from unspoken apprehension. "What if I'm not prepared for this?" What if I fail?”
Liam paused and shifted to confront her, his demeanor becoming gentle as he noticed the anxiety in her gaze. He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Eve, you possess more strength than you realize. You've encountered numerous challenges and yet you're still resilient. We'll confront whatever arises, side by side. You're not going through this on your own."
Eve found his words reassuring, but she still felt uncertain in her heart. While they strolled, she couldn't shake off her concern—would she have the inner strength when it was needed? And would it suffice to safeguard the people she held dear?
With a deep breath, Eve resolved to push her doubts aside. Trusting in herself and in the connection she had with Liam was essential. No matter what challenges came their way, she was prepared to confront them directly. However, as the darkness of the night intensified, she couldn't ignore the sensation that the shadows were encroaching and that the true struggle was merely commencing.
