Eve trailed behind Liam through the pitch-black woodland, the air heavy with the scent of pine and earth. She felt uneasy and anxious at the same time because of the tension that lingered from the ceremony, but Liam moved with a solid purpose that made her feel better. His presence was magnetic, drawing her closer even as her mind raced with questions. She had never expected this turn of events. How could she? The life she had known—one of quiet submission, of trying to fit into the mold the pack had set for her—had been shattered in an instant.
Eve maintained a distance from Liam, her steps reluctant. She couldn't get over the feeling that, despite his protective approach, there was an enormous gap of mystery between them. He had saved her and claimed her as his mate, but she still had no idea why. Eve knew the pack wouldn't take the Alpha's actions lightly because they had completely upended everything. A lot of questions were racing through her head, answers to which she wasn't sure she wanted to hear. They landed far from the pack's curious eyes and ears, at a serene spot deep in the woods. The moonlight penetrated the canopy above, casting sweeping shadows across the woods floor. Liam stopped and turned to face her, his look incomprehensible.
“Why did you bring me here?” Eve asked, trying to keep the tremor out of her voice. The earlier events had left her shaken, and now, alone with Liam, the uncertainty gnawed at her.
"I needed to speak with you away from the others," Liam said, his voice low and forceful. "There are things you need to know, things that have been hidden from you for too long."
Eve felt her heart skip a beat. She had always thought there were mysteries buried in her history, shadows that hung over her existence without explanation. But hearing Liam speak it aloud made the reality even more terrifying. "What are you talking about?" she said, barely above a whisper.
Liam's disposition softened somewhat, and a tinge of regret appeared in his eyes. “Your parents,” he began, the words heavy with the weight of old memories. “They weren’t just ordinary members of the pack. They were powerful, respected, but they were also targets.”
Eve experienced a sharp stab of terror. Although, she was always aware that her parents had passed away when she was young, time and the silence of those who ought to have informed her had clouded the details. “What do you mean targets?”
“There were those who feared their influence,” Liam continued, his tone grave. “Feared what they represented. Your father, especially, was a visionary. He intended to bring the packs together, to put an end to the old practices of rivalry and killing. But not everyone agreed with him.”
Eve's thoughts raced as she attempted to take in this fresh revelation. Her father, a visionary? A leader? It seemed so far removed from the life she had lived, the quiet existence under the watchful eyes of the pack. “What happened to them?”
Liam hesitated, as if weighing how much to tell her. “They were betrayed,” he finally said, the word laced with bitterness. “Someone close to them wanted to ensure that their vision would never come to pass. It was a calculated move, and it left you vulnerable.”
Eve was having trouble breathing. Betrayed. A wave of strong emotions, including grief, rage, and an intolerable sense of loss, overcame her as the word kept repeating in her head. Her voice faltered as she questioned, "And Uncle Marcus?" “Did he know?”
Liam gave a slow nod. "He knew enough of it to keep you safe. But there were things that he was unaware of, things that had been kept secret for years."
Eve sank onto a fallen log, her hands shaking as her legs grew weak. Her life had been based on omissions, lies, and incomplete truths. With more attention to herself than Liam, she muttered, "Why didn't he tell me?".
"He was trying to protect you," Liam whispered softly, edging closer yet maintaining a polite distance. "He wanted to keep you safe, to give you an opportunity at a normal life, even if it meant keeping you in the dark."
Eve shook her head, tears gathering in her eyes. “But I deserved to know. I needed to know.”
"I'm telling you now because it's not safe to keep these secrets anymore," Liam said in an increasingly agitated tone. "There are forces at play that are far greater than you realize, and they're drawing close."
Eve stared up at him, her vision obscured by tears. "What exactly do you mean?" What forces?
Liam's face darkened as he took a deep breath. Although he is a component of it, Killian is merely one piece in a larger puzzle. You are seen as a threat by those who still oppose everything your parents stood for and who want to forget about the past. "The blood in Eve ran cold. She objected, saying, "But I don't know anything.". "Nobody is in danger from me. Liam stated with a fierce look, "That's where you're wrong.". "You bear your parents' legacy, even though you may not be aware of it. You are more significant than you realize because their blood flows through your veins."
With Liam's words bearing down on her, Eve fell silent for a considerable amount of time. Although she had always felt a little out of place, she had never considered this to be the cause. "What should I do?" she asked, her voice small and uncertain. Despite the flurry of emotions raging inside her, Liam's expression softened and he knelt down in front of her. Silently, he remarked, "You're not alone in this.". "I'm here to support and shield you. But you need to trust me.”
Eve searched his eyes, looking for any hint of deceit, but all she saw was sincerity and a resolve that made her heart ache. Could she really trust him? Could she trust anyone after everything she had just learned?
But what choice did she have? If what Liam said was true, then her life was in danger, and she needed help—his help.
“I believe you,” she said delicately, the words feeling like both a yield and a newly discovered quality.
Liam gestured, a little grin playing on his lips. “Good. We'll figure this out together.”
Eve took a profound breath, attempting to comfort herself. There were still numerous questions and unknowns, but for the first time, she felt a glint of trust. Possibly, fair perhaps, she would discover the answers she needed—as well as the strength to confront anything that lays ahead.
But as she looked into Liam's eyes, she couldn't shake the idea that this was the beginning of a much greater, darker experience. One that would put her to the test in ways she seemed not to have envisioned and one that would uncover actualities she wasn't ready to confront.
