Voices. Muffled. Far away.
Metal scraping. Clanking.
My eyes fluttered.
"...scared of the dark!" Charlotte's voice. Distant. Echoing.
I tried to move. My body wouldn't respond.
“Help!” My voice broke free. Barely a whisper.
Axel’s head turned. His brown eyes lingered.
For one second, he saw me
On the floor, barely conscious, then he turned back to Charlotte.
Pulling her closer. “It’s okay, love. I’ve got you.”
She whimpered.
"Hurry up, she's scared of the dark!" Axel screamed.
The rescuers broke through the emergency exit door above me.
Light flooded in. Too bright.
“Here, take her with you!” Axel growled. But he wasn’t referring to me.
He didn’t care about me lying on the floor. Half conscious.
The moment the doors opened, he lifted Charlotte to them, forcing them to take
