MAYA’S POV
I scurried off, headed to the door suddenly colliding with Gary. My eyes widened in shock as I met his own eyes filled with rage. Has he been looking at me? Did he by chance know about what happened?
“G-gary,” I stammered, lowering my eyes. “I can explain,”
“Some hours ago, you begged to get laid off from your job, just three minutes into another work duty, you’re already throwing yourself at a client just because is a rich man,”
I was shocked, my mouth agape. “No!” I exclaimed. I didn’t know what to say. The stranger sure did sweep me off my feet but I didn’t give permission because I figured he was rich.
He scanned me, his face scrunched up in disgust as his hands landed on my hands. I was holding the blank cheque but as soon as I realized he had suddenly picked interest in it, I made sure to hold it tightly.
“Give me that,” he said, gesturing at it. I hesitated, giving him a “please” look. If only he would let me have it. I actually didn’t plan to use it because that would definitely mean that I had given my consent and my body in exchange for money but then circumstances would make someone do otherwise and go against his or her principle. I could pay off what he keeps saying I owe him— the money accumulated ever since he started feeding me and also I would like to set Leon up.
“Please, Gary,” I begged in tears but he ignored me. He forcefully snatched the cheque away from my hand, almost tearing it.
“Go home and get dressed. Meet me at the Nightwalkers Club tonight,” he instructed, walking away before I could say a word. Night walkers? Why do I need to be there?
****************
I gazed at myself for the thousandth time, my reflection in the mirror staring back at me. My dress was a bit tighter and my neck jewelry was tight thus becoming a choker. I huffed. I had put on more weight without even realizing it.
I grabbed my purse and headed out the door, hailed a taxi, and gave the driver the address my uncle had given me.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. What was I getting myself into? I had no idea what the night had in store for me. Whatever it is, I just hope it was for the best.
The taxi pulled up in front of a sleek, modern building, and I could see the neon lights of the club shining through the windows. I paid the driver and stepped out onto the sidewalk, feeling a little like Cinderella heading to the ball. Except, of course, my dress wasn't quite as fancy, and my carriage was a beat-up old taxi.
“Maya!” I heard a familiar voice. I turned my attention to the direction of the voice, it was my uncle. He was seen waving at me to come in while he gave a sign to the bouncers to let me in.
“Why am I here, Gary?” I questioned, suddenly feeling a little discomfort. On a normal day, Gary would never let me visit a club if I wasn’t going to sell my body and make him some money but here I was which seemed a little unusual.
“You’re going to do something for me,” he said, scanning the room as if he was searching for something.
“What could that be?” I replied, fear enveloping me.
“You see, here’s a place where men can bid on women to become their wives,” he spoke, making me gasp in fear. “You are going to make your dress short enough to attract the men over there,”
“What?!” I exclaimed, my voice quivering as I protested. “You’re going to sell me off to this deadly man? What did I ever do to you?” How could he do this to me? Just when I thought I had a chance with the strange man, and now this. How would he find me if he ever decided to come back to the brothel? How do I deal with my feelings for him after that night?
“Maya, listen, you’re not that important to me,” he said sternly. “In case you don’t know it, I want you gone since you’re of no use to me,”
I ran my thumb across my cheeks, wiping my tears away. “What…”
“Shhh… the event is starting,” he interrupted. “Now I want you to go up the stage and stand just like the other women even though you look nothing like them in that fat and ugly body of yours. Try to look inviting and remember, I must leave here without you but with a lot of money in exchange for everything I’ve done for you,”
“Please, don’t do this to me. I promise to be a good girl and do everything you want. Just don’t sell me off to these people,” I begged
“Maya, get going!” He glared at me
I felt my heartbreak, tears threatening to fall helplessly again but I fought back. I couldn’t embarrass myself anymore. Maybe this was for the best. Maybe life would be better for me if I left. Maybe I would finally see the light at the end of the tunnel this time around. Just maybe…
I climbed upstage, my body shaking in fear. The men looked like nothing responsible or human. Almost all of them had a joint, blowing off the smoke like it was a doctor’s prescription.
One of the men walked up to me, scrutinizing me. My heart raced with anticipation and fear. The room was low with light, the only sound I could hear was the murmur of voices and the occasional bid. He looked like he was one of the bidders. He tucked my hair behind my hair, nodding to himself. What was that? Approval?
“For her, I bid $38,000,” He said, turning to the organizers. I felt like a piece of meat, being auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Suddenly, one of the men standing at the front of the room tapped the shoulder of the one who had started to bid. “Don't bid,” he said, his voice low and commanding. “Give them what they want. We must leave with her tonight,”
