MAYA
I gently wiped Alessia's forehead, her skin cool and clammy. The coma room was warm, the only sound was the steady beep of the machines monitoring her vital signs. I had been tasked with cleaning and caring for her, and I took my job seriously. She was so fragile, so vulnerable, and I felt sympathy for her.
As I worked, I heard the door open behind me. I turned to see one of Alexander's men standing in the doorway, a sneer on his face. “Hey, fat ass,” he said, his voice dripping with disdain. “The boss demands your presence immediately,”
I felt angry and low at his words, but I pushed it aside. I knew that I couldn’t even react. I was too weak to besides it was a dangerous place and I wouldn’t want to cause problems and face Alexander’s wrath. Instead, I nodded calmly and followed him out of the room.
We arrived at Alexander's room, and the man gestured for me to enter. I stood before him, my heart almost beating out of my chest. He gazed at me with an unreadable expression, his eyes seeming to bore into my soul.
“You're going to do one more job for me. I've assigned you to be my personal maid and your duties will include cleaning my room, among other things,” he said sternly, avoiding my eyes
I felt a surge of anger at his words, but I bit back my retort. Instead, I decided to take a different tack. He literally wanted me gone some time ago and now he wants me close? “Don't you recognize me?” I asked, my voice laced with a hint of vulnerability.
Alexander's expression didn't change, but his eyes flickered ever so slightly. “No,” he said finally, his voice firm. “I don't know who you are or where you came from. And even if I did, it wouldn't matter. You're here now, and you'll do as I say without any hesitation,”
His words stung, and I felt a pang of hurt. But I pushed it aside, deciding to forget it for now. “I noticed your room has been cleaned,” I said instead, my voice detached. “I'll resume my duties tomorrow. If I may take my leave…”
I turned to go, but Alexander's voice stopped me. “How did you get here? Do you even have any idea of where you are?” he asked, his tone curious.
I smiled to myself, a small, secret smile. And then I turned to reply, my voice laced with a hint of satisfaction. “Are you saying you didn't specifically pay to own me?” I asked, my eyes locked on his.
Alexander hesitated, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face. And then he gestured to the bed, his voice softening ever so slightly. “Sit,” he said.
I raised an eyebrow, but I sat anyway, my eyes never leaving his face. He sat down as well, our bodies almost coming in contact with each other, making the hairs on my body perk up.
His eyes narrowed as he began to speak. “I told you never to show up in front of me,” he said through his teeth with a low and serious voice.
“I thought I would never see you again,” I blurted out, inwardly cursing myself for being vulnerable.
He was taken aback, concern flashing through his eyes. “Aren’t you scared, Maya?” He queried
Right. Why was I this bold? Getting involved with him was a dangerous thing to do yet I felt at peace although sometimes I get chills concerning everything nevertheless, I still felt safe.
“Not when I have you,” I replied, biting my lower lip
“You are so free-spirited. You trust anyone,” he said, his words coming off as a scold than a compliment. He continuously stared at me, unknowingly putting me in a tight position. It felt like he was holding back on something that I couldn’t place my hands on. Could it be that he feels the same way I do and he has been low-key wishing to run into me again?
“I hope you don’t think that I am worried about you?” he said, breaking the silence. “Don’t flatter yourself, Maya. If you’re going to be here, be sure not to get on my lane else you won’t live to tell the story. Also, bear in mind that you signed up for this,”
I raised an eyebrow, my mouth agape with no words coming out.
“Get out,” he said icily. I really don’t understand him. This minute he is soft, the next minute he is cold and deadly. How do I get him to be nice? Or was I asking for too much?
I stood up to leave but my composure was short-lived when my ankle suddenly twisted, causing me to fall and surprisingly, I found myself in Alexander’s arms. It was as I’d he had been waiting for the moment. His strong hands held me carefully with his eyes boring into my soul, making my heart beat heavily. Then suddenly, we felt the urge to lean in. As our lips were about to land on itself, we heard a voice and it made us jolt away.
Alexander and I turned to see who it was and shockingly…
It was her…
Alessia.
I exhaled sharply, my face slowly falling into a beam. I was happy she had finally survived after being in a coma for three years.
“Alessia,” Alexander slowly called. He didn’t seem angry neither did he seem happy to see her but then I heard the dreadfulness in his voice. Was he sorry for something or what? Who was she to him? His jaw tightened up but still managed to force a smile.
Alessia smiled back weakly at him, gesturing at where we were to one of the housekeepers who had helped put her into a wheelchair and pushed her to Alexander’s room.
“What is going on here?” She asked Alexander, gesturing at me. She seemed a little too perfect to be just out of the coma some minutes ago and it was disturbing.
“Did you already move on from your fiancée?” She gagged
What was she talking about? Fiancée?
I was so stupid to thin
k that I had a chance with him.
