Shadows Beneath the Surface

Mira’s POV The morning began quietly, but the silence inside the pack house felt heavier than usual. Quiet mornings were meant to be peaceful, yet they left too much space for thoughts I did not want. Thoughts I had learned to bury deep. The rule was simple: keep my head down, finish my duties, and disappear into the background before anyone noticed me for too long. The scent of warm bread filled the kitchen as I entered. A few omegas were already at work, moving in a practiced rhythm, shoulders brushing, hands busy. No one looked at me for more than a second. That was good. Being invisible kept me safe. Then Selene arrived. Her presence shifted the room immediately. Conversations softened. Movements quickened. She did not need to announce herself. Authority clung to her like perfume. Her hair was perfectly arranged, and her posture was sharp and deliberate. I heard she is the Beta’s sister, that's why she is arrogant. She scanned the room like a ruler inspecting servants, and when her eyes landed on me, they hardened. “You are slow today,” she said, lifting a tray of fruit and examining it as though searching for fault. “I am working at the same pace as yesterday,” I replied calmly. “If you want something done differently, you can tell me.” The kitchen seemed to shrink around us. “I do not need explanations from an omega,” she said coldly. “Just work faster.” I inclined my head and returned to my task, chopping herbs for the healing room. My hands stayed steady even as irritation tightened my chest. Reacting would only give her what she wanted. I was halfway through slicing when the air changed. Warm cedar. Night wind. Power restrained by control. The Alpha had entered. I did not turn immediately. I forced my hands to keep moving, though every instinct in me had already shifted. When I finally looked up, Alpha Rowan stood in the doorway, arms crossed loosely, gaze fixed on me with quiet intensity. “You work early,” he said. “I prefer finishing before the halls grow busy,” I replied. “Less trouble that way.” His brow lifted slightly. “You speak as though trouble seeks you out.” I lowered my eyes. “I only try not to attract attention.” His gaze sharpened, as if my words had struck something deeper than intended. “Selene troubles you,” he said, not asking. “She does not,” I replied evenly. “She only prefers control.” “That does not excuse disrespect.” “It is fine, Alpha.” “It is not.” The certainty in his voice surprised me. Not loud. Not angry. Just absolute. When I looked up again, he had stepped closer. Too close for comfort. Too close for indifference. His presence pressed into the surrounding space, heavy and aware. His gaze dropped briefly to my hands, then returned to my face. He watched me a moment longer, as though measuring something unseen. “Meet me in the garden later,” he added. “The healer needs fresh roots. I want someone precise.” “There are others who can do it, Alpha,” I said, bowing slightly. I didn't want attention. “I want you.” The words settled low and warm. I nodded, and he left without another glance. Across the kitchen, Selene had seen everything. Her eyes burned with something darker than irritation. --- The sun was high by the time I reached the garden. Light spilled across the ground, warm and golden. This place was my refuge. Soil beneath my fingers. Roots between my palms. The earth never lied. I crouched and trimmed carefully, breathing in the calm. My thoughts strayed, just briefly, to a truth no one here knew. I am the last daughter of the Hale bloodline. A lineage tied to ancient wolves and forgotten power. I forced the thought away before it could root. The past was dangerous. Remembering was dangerous. Footsteps approached. “You think too deeply,” Alpha Rowan said. “You startled me,” I replied. “No,” he said calmly. “You sensed me. You simply chose not to react.” My grip tightened around the root. “I focus when I work.” He crouched beside me, close enough that his shoulder brushed mine. The contact was brief, accidental — and yet my body reacted instantly. Awareness flared, sharp and unbidden. “I see,” he murmured. We worked in silence. His presence was steady. Grounded. Protective in a way I did not ask for, and did not entirely resist. Then Selene appeared at the edge of the garden. “Alpha,” she said. “The list you requested.” Her eyes flicked to me, sharp with resentment. I stepped back immediately. “Leave it on my desk,” Alpha Rowan said without looking at her. “I will review it later.” She hesitated. Wanted more. But he had already turned away. Her gaze snapped to me. “You indulge her too much,” Selene said. “She needs to remember she is an omega.” Alpha Rowan turned slowly. “She knows her place,” he said coolly. “Do you remember yours?” Silence. Selene’s jaw tightened. She walked away without another word. When she was gone, Rowan looked at me again. “Do not let her provoke you.” “I am not,” I said, though my chest felt tight. His gaze lingered, unreadable. Then he nodded. And he left. --- I finished alone. By the time I returned to the pack house, the sky had deepened into evening. Near the back corridor, Selene stepped out from behind a pillar. I stopped. Her smile was wrong. “So,” she said softly. “You enjoy private moments with the King.” “I was ordered to work,” I replied. She stepped closer. “Quiet girls like you are the worst. Always pretending to be harmless.” “I am not pretending.” She grabbed my wrist suddenly, nails biting into her skin. “You will remember your place,” she whispered. “You are nothing. An omega taken in out of pity.” Pain flared, but I did not cry out. I had learned long ago that pain only entertained people like her. She shoved me hard. I stumbled backward — and slammed into solid warmth instead of the ground. Strong arms locked around my waist and elbow, stopping my fall instantly. The scent of cedar wrapped around me. Power surged. And I knew, without looking, that the Alpha had seen everything.
