The Strike

The iron doors of the training hall swung open, and thirty students filed into the arena. Their voices echoed against the high stone walls as they took their positions around the circular sand ring. Julian stood near the front with his usual circle of friends, casually stretching his arms. But he wasn't really paying attention to them. His eyes kept drifting toward Clara. She stood near the back of the formation in sleek, fitted dark-gray sparring gear, her dark hair pulled into a tight ponytail. She looked different even in training clothes. Stronger. More composed. And, somehow, even more beautiful. Julian's gaze lingered. He had spent the last few days trying to find a way to speak to her since her return. She had barely acknowledged him. That only made him want her attention more. His Clara had once looked at him as though he were the center of her world. Now she barely looked at him at all. He didn't like how much that bothered him. Lucian stepped onto the central dais. The room gradually fell silent. His presence alone was enough to command attention. "Quiet." His deep voice wasn't loud, but it carried effortlessly through the arena. Every conversation stopped. Lucian's gray eyes swept across the students before settling briefly on Clara. He noticed the change immediately. Her stance was balanced. Her shoulders were relaxed. Her breathing was controlled. She wasn't nervous. She was ready. Today's assessment is simple," Lucian said as he stepped down into the ring. Pure hand-to-hand combat. No shifting. No claws. No relying on your wolf to compensate for poor technique. He folded his arms. Strength without control is useless. Technique without discipline is equally worthless. The students listened carefully. Then Julian stepped forward. Alpha Lucian. Lucian looked at him. I'd like to choose my opponent. Julian turned toward Clara. Their eyes met. For a moment, his confident expression softened. Clara. A few students exchanged knowing looks. Julian smiled. "I was hoping you'd give me a chance to make up for our last conversation. Clara's expression remained unreadable. He took another step toward the ring. Besides, he added with a teasing smile, I've heard you're different now. Clara simply raised an eyebrow. Julian chuckled. "Come on. Don't tell me you're still angry with me." She said nothing. Of course she couldn't. But she didn't need words. The look in her eyes told him everything. Julian's smile faltered for half a second. Then he recovered. Fine. He gestured toward the ring. Show me what all that confidence is about. A few students laughed softly. Lucian's gaze sharpened. He didn't like the way Julian was treating the assessment like a game. But he was more interested in Clara's reaction. She stepped forward. No hesitation. No fear. She crossed the wooden perimeter and entered the ring. Julian's eyes followed her. For a brief moment, he forgot about the fight entirely. The woman standing before him was the same Clara he'd abandoned three months ago. And yet she felt completely unfamiliar. She didn't look at him with longing anymore. She didn't look at him with hurt. She didn't even look angry. She simply looked at him as though he were another obstacle in her path. Something inside Julian tightened. He wanted that old look back. He wanted her attention. He wanted another chance. But first, he had to get through the woman she'd become. Lucian watched from the edge of the ring. For three months, he had seen Clara run through the early-morning fog. He had watched her train until her muscles trembled. He had watched her fall and force herself back onto her feet. He had seen the transformation happening piece by piece. But he had never seen her fight. Now, he was about to find out exactly what she had become. Take your positions. Clara raised her hands. Julian rolled his shoulders and settled into his stance. His confidence returned. Try not to hurt me too badly, he said with a crooked smile. Clara's lips curved faintly. It wasn't a smile of affection. It was almost a warning. Lucian noticed. Something stirred beneath his ribs. His wolf went suddenly still. His eyes remained fixed on Clara. "Begin." Julian lunged first. His right fist came toward Clara with enough force to knock an unprepared fighter off balance. But Clara didn't retreat. She moved. One moment she was standing in front of him. The next, she had slipped beneath his punch. Her foot swept behind his knee. Julian stumbled. Before he could recover, Clara drove a sharp side kick into his chest. BANG. Julian crashed onto the sand. The arena fell silent. For a second, he simply stared at the ceiling, stunned. Then he pushed himself up, his pride wounded more than his ribs. Clara was already waiting. Julian stared at her. That calm expression. That steady breathing. That complete lack of fear. It only made him more determined. "So that's what you've been doing all summer," he muttered. Clara raised her guard. Julian charged again. This time, he attacked faster. A punch. A second. A sweeping kick. Clara slipped past each one. Left. Right. Duck. Pivot. She moved with a precision that left the watching students struggling to follow her. And because she couldn't speak, there were no shouted threats, no angry cries, no warning sounds. Only silence. Julian swung again. Clara caught his wrist. His eyes widened. She twisted his arm, stepped into his momentum, and turned. THUD. Julian hit the sand on his back. Before he could move, Clara planted one boot firmly against his chest. The entire arena went still. Julian stared up at her. The woman standing over him wasn't the timid girl he remembered. She wasn't the woman who had cried after he abandoned her. She wasn't the girl who had once begged for his approval. She was Clara. And for the first time, Julian realized he might never get her back. His breathing grew heavier. Clara... he whispered. She looked down at him. There was no hatred in her eyes. That somehow hurt more. She simply stepped away. Lucian remained motionless at the edge of the ring. His silver eyes had never left her. He had watched her rebuild herself over the summer. He had watched the determination. The discipline. The quiet strength. But seeing it unleashed like this was something else entirely. Something deep inside him shifted. His wolf stirred beneath his skin. Mate. The word came without warning. Lucian's jaw tightened. He forced the instinct back down. Not here. Not now. He stepped into the ring. The students remained silent. Lucian looked at Clara. For a moment, their eyes met. Pride flickered in his expression. The winner is Clara he announced. His voice echoed across the arena.
