Squatting in money,Olawale displayed his frenzy; throwing the cashed four point five million up and down. Laughing and dancing to the played music,he sipped the wine held in his hand again. Not too soon, the summoned driver blew the horn. Yes,it's time to move.
In haste,he packed the cash and kept it in the safest corner. Within some minutes, the car had been loaded with his luggages. Many considered unuseful were left behind.
Directly to the rented rich apartment, the driver drove. Entering the compound, Olawale's brother and friend were first to welcome them. Accurately, they got the description but they've been waiting for more than an hour.
"Ola,Ola!! You seem so exicited."
"Friend, what do you feel? I'm in money. "
"Wow! Congratulations."
Lots of discussions, requests and jokes were on.
"Those ladies are in trouble. I'll make sure they beg their last before I accept them." Olawale said referring to his previous crushs.
"Brother, remember your in-law gave you the fund."
"Ah! Ah! Ah! See this one! You are a young guy oh!"
"Give me the money I gave you,it seems you won't need it."
"Brother, please now. Don't forget the amount alloted to our parents and my school fees."
"Then, you should keep your mouth shut."
"Daddy five."
Ola's friend make a joke to tense the atmosphere again and all teeth were shown. The conversation soon went so lovely. How to purchase a car was later discussed. As to this, all were out.
**************************************
It was a week later, just in the dawn of another bright morning, Olawale reasoned why his father-in-law kept peace. This morning he was alone, none of his girlfriend slept with him. He hasn't even start his tailoring job. Eh! The cash is almost out of hand.
Renting a shop is really costly in his current area. Will he prefer his former place? Hell no. Considering the amount needed on some machines and materials that could help him earn out the spent amount, he felt the wastage. Thank goodness, half a million is still available in bank. Eagerly, he was up to complete the day's task.
"Wickedness lies in the heart of humans." Olawale taught as he closed his house door, remembering how his family, friends, even church friends kept requiring help from him.
"They don't bother if I eat or not."
He entered his car.
"Weaallth!!...This wouldn't be the case if I hadn't show myself." He regretted.
Driving on,he continued in thoughts.
"My children, ah! Not even once had I called my lady. I didn't visit." His heart leapt, fearing an upcoming trouble.
"I can't visit now,not until I set up my shop. (Pause) I will make sure I call her."
Too grateful for the day of deep thought, the job began as big as it can. Helping him again, he lived big, sometimes beyond his income. So talented, the cash kept coming in. So,there's more to spend.
Loneliness can be of great value on the other hand,if not,Precious wouldn't have receive any call from the father of the five. Hardly does he visit his children; only on days he have a gift or two to give. Once bi-monthly possibly. Mr Akindele's family? Very calm, not for once disturbing.
This busy life kept going on till the third month that his shop appeared to be almost empty. Some of his daily used machines developed fault. He needed more money, more fund to maintain.
Yielding to the advice from his friend, he borrowed a private loan. The interest is not overbearable, but must be paid in a short term. Kept as a secret,he and his friend shared the loan in agreement of paying back together.
Olawale couldn't spend the much of the loan as the consequence will be too disgraceful. What will he do? His car requires a deal of fund, his girlfriends, family members are really on his neck for urgent attention.
"They are not necessary for now. Yhe loan needs to b paid." He concluded amind.
Problem seems knocking the third week when Olawale was to start paying back and his friend wasn't found. He couldn't even be contacted.
"Ah! He collected the lion's share." Wale starts the regrets, pacing to and fro.
Still capable of the responsibility, Olawale saved the whole return and pays without delay. Too quick, his girlfriends were kissing him bye one after the other, till none picked his call again. Not even a reply to message. Not too bothered,Olawale added more grease his elbows; worked more and spent less.
As if not pitied, in no time,he got more enemies in the family. He had to explain his circumstances to his dear friends, at least, to save some friendships.
"Seriously! You can be a fool to this extent!"
"To the extent your car is parked home."
His friends rained abuses on him, relating his stubbornness, deafness to advises and his big-mannism to his current situation.
"I told you, family comes first, not your parents. This is something that shouldn't have happened if you have been responsible. Most of us are married, we understand how it works. Instead, you prefer that useless boy,the one that doesn't have marriage in his agenda."
"In my own view,he's not worth Precious. If he had been married to that lady,is this how he would have squandered her father's wealth?"
"What?!" Olawale shouted, the words seems too painful.
"It's true." Two of his friends replied immediately.
"I'm sure Precious will share her matrimonial bed with prostitutes." One of the two jokingly said.
"No,Precious will sleep with the five while prostitutes will sleep with him." Another contributed.
"Can you just stop?" He sadly required.
"What are your plans to finish paying?"
"No standing plans."
Exchange of words began again, most rejecting the offer to help. Very soon, the meeting came to a close, each finding a means of transport back home.
Just undeniable, the said words kept resounding in Olawale's mind.
"Why were all kept till these day? Why does it mean so much but late?"
Various trials to speak with a loved one all goes unpicked. Maybe Precious is busy or angry. Soon, the day was over.
As if busy days passed by too fast,Olawale was in his sixth month. Successfully, he breathed heavily in regards to the last payment made. Stepping out,he messaged his friend's f*******: account; appreciating his deeds as he has now grown to more maturity.
Yes,the struggled pays left him almost with nothing. To feed these days looks like rolling an heavy log of wood. Thanks to two of his friends in that aspect. But,his shop is visibly empty. Most of his apprentice are gone. Of recent, he's too aggressive and charging. Though unplanned for,he lost most of his vital customers. Even the places he supplies some products to are now rejecting; he uses cheap materials and receives same amount.
Another phase of poverty seems to be knocking. Just realized, whatever acquired by luck that's not worked for will either be hard to maintain, seems useless or sold. Olawale had bought things too high to maintain. Well, mosy had been sold cheaply in urgency of loan repayment. His phone set is not an exemption. So,his house is almost empty too.
"I've craved after things that deprived my mind of wise decisions. I've ate junks that allowed me defecated knowledge. Thanks to my friends that injected some fire of wisdom into me again,I should have perish in my foolishness."
Shortly after all the sad and condemning thoughts, Olawale made up his mind to explain his situation to Precious the next day.
Soon, it was Friday morning. Olawale dressed up lovingly in preparation of meeting the mother of his children. Trecking off,he rehearsed over and over again what's to be said. Before an hour,he was there. With him was a bought rose; bought with the sacrificed amount he wished to gain favour. So much familiar with the gateman,he was allowed in,in no time. Loved for his enthusiasm and funny acts, all maids greeted him happily. Luck laying rug for his success, his in-laws were out. With a loving smile,he went in, singing a love song with a charming voice.
"Unbelievable!" Precious clapped in amazement.
It may have been long practiced, but Olawale still understands Precious unrejectable actions. So,he charmed her into accepting him in. Already rehearsed, Olawale began the act with so much emotions. Within minutes, the says ended with a bit of his challenges.
"Exactly. My ears heard right. I've been longing to hear the reason behind the love, the unplanned visit and the messages. Now I know, you love my status and not me. Not even your kids."
"Is not like that."
"Not even a bit of respect for your in-laws. Olawale, tell me,what do you want now? Another assistance?"
Caught in the right corner, an escape reason was quickly reasoned, presented lovingly, even with a smile. Unaccepted,a shout soon lifted him to his feet. Embarrassed, Precious' grandmother was in the next sitting room. She also came, appearing in their presence.
"Mama, imagine this brat requiring for money."
"No,I never said that." He shouted in haste.
"Lover boy,get out." Mama commanded.
His gaze going off to the main sitting room, he saw his lovely looking kids playing in beautiful walkers he didn't purchase.
"Mama, only the explainations behind my absence escaped my lips,I never require for money."
"So I call the securities to assist you get out?"
Mama seems to be serious with her decision. Does she hate him so much?
"Okay. (Turning to Precious). I'll be back shortly. For now,I plead for your pardon. Extend my regards to my babies."
"Make sure you take your dirty rose along, I'm not begging for it." Precious threw the rose behind him as she locked the door.
"Come here darling, he's just coming to his senses. I pray he gains it before you meet someone better than him."
"Mama,you pray?!"
"Yes,he's your husband. Who knows if destiny might bring you two together again? It's better you pray for him."
Throughout that day,Olawale seems to be sorrowful. After work,he went to his junior brother. As soon as he knocked, his brother peeped through the window to check who it might be. But,there was no one's appearance.
"Who's there?"
Releasing his words in a low but stressed tone,he almost bursted his anger at the door. Within the twinkling of seconds, the old wooden door was opened. Pleasantries kept short,Olawale soberly walked in.
"Good morning ma." Olawale partially prostrated while greeting his mother. Disappointing his expectation, Olawale's mother replied a hiss and stepped in.
Feeling hated,Olawale quickly explained his earlier intentions and the disgraceful outcome. With the need for been pitied, Olawale paused his says, awaiting a lovely or calming contribution or suggestion.
"You mean you approached your wife mainly for fund?"
"And is it bad?"
"Too much."
"Why?"
His brother shared his views, making him understand Olawale himself won't render any other if he was to be in his in-law's shoes.
"I'll thought we'll be there together to beg them."
Before his brother could answer, his mother joined the conversation.
"He's going nowhere. Olawale, is this how you will continue living your life?..."
Another knock of wisdom patiently received without a reply.
"Mum,what did I do?"
"Good."
The lecture began, a kind he wouldn't have reasoned with in the past.
"Okay ma. I'll do exactly as you said."
More words exchanged, Olawale left.
