Chapter 2

A Few Days Later Lillian’s birthday celebration was nothing short of extravagant, held at her family’s prestigious hotel. The venue shimmered with elegance, transformed entirely for the occasion, a reflection of the Chen family’s heritage and status. Though the Chen family had seen better days, their name still carried weight. They might not hold the same power as the Johnson family anymore, but their reputation, like their history, was undeniably formidable. The center of the room was dominated by the dance floor, a space designed to encourage joy and revelry. Satin drapes cascaded from above, offering an air of both intimacy and grandeur. The excitement was palpable, and Lillian, standing at the threshold, felt a flutter of anticipation in her chest. She smiled nervously. She had worked so hard to make this moment perfect—her coming of age. But there was more riding on this night than just personal pride. Lillian had already discussed the marriage alliance with her parents. The Johnson family had agreed, and it promised to elevate both their status and business prospects. But deep down, Lillian was torn. She wanted this, right? She had to. Her father had made it clear that if she didn’t take action soon, he’d find a suitable match for her. This will work, she told herself, forcing the doubts aside as her eyes scanned the room for Oliver. She spotted him by the entrance, standing slightly apart, scanning the crowd. She made her way through the sea of guests, greeting her close friends, Ivy Parker and Zoey Liu, before finally reaching Oliver. “What are you doing over here all by yourself?” she teased, a smile curving her lips. “Come on, it’s your girl’s big day. Don’t just stand there.” Oliver glanced up, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “I’m not just standing here. I’ve got a surprise for you. Just wait a minute,” he said, his voice filled with excitement. Lillian hesitated, but she had already been summoned by her parents. “I really can’t wait. They need me to start the party,” she said, though there was a soft tug of disappointment in her voice. “But I have an announcement to make. So hurry up.” Oliver nodded, holding up his hands in surrender. “I won’t be long. Just give me a moment.” With that, Lillian turned and made her way to the podium where her parents stood, poised and regal, commanding the room’s attention. Her father, Mr. Chen, looked every bit the patriarch of the family, his proud smile a clear reflection of his joy in the occasion. Mrs. Chen stood beside him, equally graceful and dignified. Lillian took her place at the piano, her fingers poised over the keys. The moment she began playing “Für Elise,” the room seemed to fall silent. The familiar melody wove its way through the space, pulling the audience in, capturing their attention. Lillian’s fingers moved fluidly over the keys, her music weaving an emotional connection with the guests. As the last note lingered in the air, the room erupted in applause. “Such a beautiful performance,” someone whispered. “No wonder Mr. Chen’s daughter is so highly regarded.” Lillian’s heart swelled with pride as the applause continued, but she couldn’t shake the knot of tension in her stomach. This night, this moment, was supposed to be perfect. But she wasn’t sure if she was ready for what came next. Descending from the stage, she spotted Oliver and his family, then turned to face the audience once more. Taking the microphone from her father, she cleared her throat, gathering her courage. “Thank you all for being here to celebrate this special day with me. As many of you know, today marks my coming of age,” she began, her voice steady but soft. “But today is also the day I make a very important announcement.” Lillian glanced over at Oliver, who stood off to the side, his eyes wide with curiosity and confusion. He had no idea what was coming. But that only made her nerves worsen. She looked back at him, her heart pounding. “Oliver,” she began, her voice trembling ever so slightly, “we’ve been friends for as long as I can remember. We’ve had our fair share of fights and misunderstandings, and yes, I know I’ve been... difficult at times.” She smiled, the words feeling like an apology she had kept hidden for too long. “But through it all, you’ve always been there. Always.” Oliver opened his mouth to speak, but she cut him off, her resolve firming. “I love you, Oliver Johnson. I want to be by your side, through everything, for the rest of my life. I want to build a family with you, and share in every moment, good and bad.” She took a deep breath, her chest tightening with a mix of excitement and dread. Her voice quivered slightly as she continued. “So, what I’m asking, Oliver, is... Would you marry me?” The words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of her emotions and the uncertainty of his answer. The room fell silent as all eyes turned to Oliver, waiting for him to respond.
