“So what has changed?” Jim asked during a lecture at Lancaster. “What have we really learned? Are our democracies any stronger, our economies any fairer, our environment any safer? Our society is as polarised as it ever has been, our news as unreliable as ever, social problems continue to grow as the poor get poorer and the rich get richer because of a system that we know has been inequitable for a century and a half and yet we still continue to do nothing about it, we continue to elect leaders who promise to maintain the status quo, even though the status quo is not good for either us or the planet.
