A car arrived to take Jim to the party congress in London. The car joined a convoy of four others. It was too dangerous to travel on the motorway alone. Occasionally, they would pass destroyed vehicles, abandoned at the side of the road. When Jim arrived at the venue, they invited him to the platform where he listened to speech after speech, affirming that the speakers believed in a national, not a separatist, government. While eating the lunch which had been provided for them, Jim sent a message to his sister explaining that he was in London, asking whether she was still living at the same address and apologising that he probably would not have time to visit.
