"What? What are you trying to do?" Alphonce's voice trembled with a mix of confusion and sadness. His jaw hung open, his shoulders slumped, and a heavy sigh escaped him. He looked as if he wasn't the billionaire the world knew right now.
He was completely sad but I wasn't having it. He lied to me all these years!
No! He might have been my saviour five years ago, but that didn't mean he had the right to deceive me. Who knew, maybe he had planned all this from the start. A sudden realisation hit me, and my eyes widened.
"Philip! Open the door right now, or I'll call the police and tell them you kidn*pped me!" My eyes were glaring coldly at the driver that he had to drop his face down.
"What? You can't do that, Gift. Where will you go? It's not safe for you alone.”
"Don't 'Gift' me!" I snapped, turning abruptly to the driver. "Philip! I won't repeat myself!" The driver, clearly caught off guard, glanced between me and his boss, confusion etched on his face.
But I didn't care. All I wanted was to get out of this damn car and away from them. "Philip, do as the lady instructed," Alphonce's voice was calm, almost pleading, but it didn't matter.
He lied to me, and who knew what else he was capable of? Or what else he was hiding from me?
The car came to a halt. Without waiting for Alphonce to open the door, I pushed it open on the other side and jumped out, clutching my black purse.
"I'm sorry," Alphonce's voice carried a note of sorrow, but I turned away. I couldn't let him see my tears. How could he lie to me? I trusted him with my life. Why didn't he tell me that Alexander was his twin brother?
Even if he didn't know about me and the twins, still, he could have told me because Alexander was the Alpha. So of course, everyone knew about him.
The car drove off, and I crossed the road, standing on the other side, I wiped my tears.
The pain from five years ago resurfaced, something I never wanted to relive. The memory of the fire, the torture of my flesh burning in the fire, the fear that no one would come to save me, that it wad all over for me.
All of that made me shed more tears.
"No! No! No! Ela, you promised to let bygones be bygones. Why are you crying?" I fought back the tears as I spoke to no one but myself while wiping away those already streaming down my cheeks.
"Miss, are you alright?" A taxi driver's voice brought me back to the present.
"Yes, I am fine. Could you take me to the Biafra Hotel, please?" He looked hesitant.
"I'm not heading there." He retorted back but I gazed at him with pleading eyes.
"Just take me there, and I'll double your payment, I promise." He hesitated for a moment, then nodded, opening the backseat door for me. In less than ten minutes, we stopped in front of a huge hotel with bold letters reading "Biafra Airways Hotel," owned by the Biafra airport,I guessed.
"Thank you." I quickly alighted, paying him more than he asked. His face lit up at the amount I had given him with gratitude and surprise.
"Miss, do you have any reservations here?" A man in a black suit approached, and I nodded, smiling.
At the time, the taxi driver had taken off already.
"Yes, I do." I had already made the arrangements while in the taxi. This was an expensive hotel, but it was the only one nearby. I didn’t want to risk running into Alphonce again, especially now that I was furious with him.
"Show me," the man instructed. I pulled out my phone, cutting off an incoming call from Alphonce, and showed the man the message.
"Thank you, this way." He gestured for me to follow. Just as I was about to, he paused. "Your suitcase, ma'am?"
Hell no!
I had forgotten my suitcase in Alphonce's car.
But it didn't matter. I could buy whatever I wanted because I didn’t want anything that reminded me of him right now. "No, I don’t have any." I smiled awkwardly. The man seemed puzzled but quickly regained his composure and led me inside.
After signing in at the reception, I was guided to my room. "Everything is inside, but if you need anything else, don't hesitate to use the office phone on the table."
"Thank you." I nodded. The man was about to leave when he turned back, his eyes lingering on me.
"Is there a problem, sir?"
"You're very beautiful, miss."
"Thank you." I forced another smile, feeling my cheeks ache from all the smiles I had to come up with today. The man nodded and rushed out of the room.
As soon as the door closed behind him, I leaned against it, tears streaming down my face.
The image of the past, still haunting me.
"You should have told me," I muttered through sobs. I threw my cape and sunglasses to the floor. Was I overthinking, or had everything that happened five years ago been part of some plan? Alphonce had appeared just as I was about to die in that fire.
How did he know I was in that room and I needed help?
It was a secret passage leading to the fire for crying out loudly.
My heart pounded furiously in my chest. Could it be true, as Alexander suggested at the airport? That all those times he was here to ruin Alexander's life? Was I part of Alphonce's revenge plan? Maybe he knew about me and Alexander!
I went numb at that thought.
'No, Daniela, he saved your life, you are just overthinking,' Elena's voice echoed in my head, but doubt gnawed at me.
"I wish I could believe you." With a determined breath, I grabbed my phone from my purse and dialled a number. "Mourine, investigate everything that happened five years ago." Sweat trickled down my forehead despite the cool air from the room's air conditioner.
I hung up the phone immediately, not waiting for questions, when another call came in, and I froze.
