The phone buzzed in my hand, the name flashing across the screen hitting me like a jolt of electricity...
Emma.
For a second, I just stared, my pulse quickening. She never called me. Not unless it was about Lily, and even then, it was usually a cold, clipped text. But this? This was unexpected.
I swiped to answer, barely getting a word out before her voice sliced through the line, sharp and laced with fury.
“How dare you?” she seethed. “How f*****g dare you think you could have your mother offer me money to abandon my child?”
My stomach twisted.
Goddamn it.
I ran a hand down my face, inhaling deeply. Of course, my mother had done something like this. It shouldn’t have surprised me, but still, the thought of Emma being put through that kind of insult made me sick.
