The Revelation and Decision
His eyes were filled with sadness as he turned to Maya with a heavy heart. Maya, I have seen these dark prophecies, so I did consult the seer, and she did reveal our union could lead to the fall of Eldoria. I.. I can not go through with this ceremony. You and our kingdom are in danger."
Tears sprang up in Maya's eyes at his words, wrecking her heart. "Richard, no. We can face this together. Our bond is strong. There is light within darkness and we are the light.
Richard, anyway, shook his head with strong conviction. That is a risk I cannot afford to take, Maya. I love you too much to hurt you. In the name of Eldoria, I refuse to accept this bond.
The crowd watched in shock.
Even the night air was heavy with the fragrance of pine and the song of the wind breezing through the Whispering Wood Alpha Richard Thorn strode with determination through the forest, his steps quiet against the moss-coated property. The moon set high in the night sky, bathing the world below in an otherworldly light. All good and bad thoughts came to Richard's mind in those days of anticipation of the mating with Queen Maya, but also above all, bad thoughts, like the terrifying visions that inhabited his dreams during the previous weeks.
Richard, to the core, was a dynamic person, a warrior who met conflict head-on. But these images, terrifyingly real, reminded him of no danger he had ever faced. Told him of a shadow that stirred with their joining, an abomination that would consume Eldoria if indeed they truly joined. Protobuf Richard was determined to find their long-time seer, an ancient wise man who resided deep in the Whispering Woods.
Few knew the path winding through the forest, for it was a thing of mystery and magic. The trees beside him seemed to speak in whispers as he strode past, waving their boughs in the direction of an unfelt wind. His walk was perfectly still and his steps were scarily calm - as if he was trained to be the ultimate warrior. His heart hammered a mixture of terror and resolve in his chest, even if he showed only the steely facades of the latter on the outside. He had to learn the truth, to know the substance of the dark prophecy that loomed over his relationship with Maya.
Richard reached a moonlit clearing that felt like it took hours to get there. Every murder happened here and at the heart of it all was a small little cottage covered in ivy and branded with a thatched straw roof. Warm, golden light filtered through the windows before the candle finally ignited. Richard stepped up to the door, his hand pausing for a brief moment before he knocked.
The creaking door swung aside, and the seer appeared, a very old woman with hair as white as moonlight and eyes that could see the shadows of the future. She was dressed in plain robes, but her lack of finery was belied by her aura of authority.
"Alpha Richard," she whispered, her voice barely audible, yet bearing the weight of an eternity. "I have been expecting you."
Richard nodded in response. "Seer, I seek your counsel. For I have long been haunted by dark dreams that tell a prophecy of the future and its evil bonds to me and Queen Maya. What do these visions signify that I have, that are of Harry, and how do I protect her and our kingdom?
The seer nodded, stepping aside as Richard made his way into the cottage. "Come in, Alpha. We have a lot to discuss."
The inside smelled like herbs, and a quiet fire crackled. The walls were packed solid with shelves of ancient tomes and mysterious artifacts. A small table stood at the center of the room, and upon it sat an equally weathered leather-bound book. The seer motioned for him to sit, and then she sat across from him.
She said, her eyes locked on his, "What visions have you had?"
Richard drew in a deep breath as he re-lived the dreams that had followed him like a ghost. I saw a shadowy thing in my visions. Other than the little voice that tells me my family is cursed, and if I ever bonded with Maya, I just might awaken it. It says ruin and darkness will swallow Eldoria if we go on with the ceremony.
The seeer looked attentive and serious. She picked up the book, more ancient and weathered than Richard as if it were her most prized possession, and when he finished, she opened it and began to lovingly flip its pages. The pages of that book were of ancient runes and drawings, no man knew the meanings anymore save the most learned beings.
The seer finally spoke, her voice colored with sadness, 'Your visions have been of an ancient curse. The curse was cast upon your bloodline many generations ago by a sorceress who wanted retaliation when it came to your ancestors. The darkness that would envelop the kingdom was to rise when a Thorn and one of the Eldoria royal family met.
Her words sent Richard's heart plummeting. Cannot this curse be lifted?" So that I can protect Maya and our people?
The seer closed the book, locking eyes with Richard, compassion on her own. A curse of such strength cannot be broken easily. But the first step is to know its nature. We need to dig into your visions further, to find the truth they hold.
She rose and crossed to a small cabinet, where she took out a vial of a sparkling fluid. She thrust the vial at Richard and said, "Drink this. It will enable you to see further, and we can examine the prophecy further in this form.
The vial was claimed by Richard with determination. He popped the top and drank the liquid, which seemed to make him feel warm inside. The seer murmured a melody and wove a chant that hung like a mist over the room. Richard could feel his mind slipping away, the world around him fading away into a blur of shadows.
The Vision
Richard stood in a barren landscape under a roiling sky full of dark clouds. Doom reeked in the air. On the horizon he spotted a smoky outline which seemed to be the figure in his future visions, recognizing no shape but an evil presence. As he drew nearer, the figure turned to him and the eyes shone a deathly luminescence.
The figure waved a hand and said, "Richard Thorn," and the voice seemed to run through the bunch of trees throughout the bleak ground. Such a depiction of Ciri, powerless, relies on a few simple devices: the piercing green eyes filmed in close-up, the elder forcing her back with magic, saying, pointedly and with malevolent delight: "You meant to escape your fate, but your lineage is a curse.
Despite his trembling heart, Richard hardened his voice. "Who are you? Why do you show me these things?
From the figure, there followed a soundless, chilling laugh. A curse bestowed upon your family eons ago by the dreaded Morgath sorceress, and I am its messenger. In her rage, she tethered your bloodline to this fate - because your ancestor had wronged her, betrayed her. The darkness she set into motion would awake with the royal blood of Eldoria's union.
The night was filled with images of chaos and destruction. Eldoria burned to the ground in the visage of his mind. In the ruins of their kingdom, among the souls that had fought beside him for hundreds of years, there stood Maya, her face twisted by the grief and torture she had endured. The dream or vision, or whatever it was, felt so real to him, that it startled him.
Richard said, his voice shaking with warmth, "No, we have to be able to do something about this. This cannot be allowed to happen.
The eyes of the figure seemed to bore him. The curse has been bound by blood and fate... The sound breaking would take a sorceress or equal cost to fracture it. But mind you, that great power truly does come with a price."
The image began to dim soon after these words, and Richard sensed, too, that he was receding from within, a feeling akin to being pulled backward, like out of the soothsayer's dwelling. He groaned awake, his heart rattling in his chest. His expression was one of pure concern and the seer leaned forward, watching him carefully.
"What did you see?" she asked gently.
His voice filled with grief as Richard told his vision. The apparition spoke of a sorceress named Morgath who laid the curse upon my lineage. It showed me Eldoria in pieces, with Maya writhing in agony. It told me to destroy the curse, I would have to be granted the might of the sorceress or a comparable power sacrifice.
The seer nodded, her expression serious. Morgath was a sorceress to rival the most powerful in history, and her curse does not lift easily." It could be broken, but that would mean a drastic fight and effort. Such a curse can only be nullified through an equal and opposite power.
A wave of despair washed over Richard. What does such a sacrifice require?
The seer sighed a look of melancholy behind her eyes. A sacrifice intended for good and of immense power so much that it matched the power of the curse. For some reason, that might be you having to let go of something or someone who just means the world to you. Maybe a piece of you is what has to be let go. Nothing can take the place, it is expensive, and the road is full of hazards.
Her words made sense to Richard as his mind raced. The idea of sacrificing so much for an evil woman wrenched at his conscience, but he could not even contemplate the notion of endangering Maya and their kingdom. She was their queen, and although he loved her, he was torn between keeping her safe and keeping their people safe.
I hissed and tried to continue crying until I heard him shakily say, "I need to think... let me think about it. Seer, Thank you for guiding us, seer, And for being with us. I have to head back to the palace for the event.
A gentle hand on his shoulder from the seer. The road to redemption is one step away. Remember you do not walk alone Alpha. Go to the strong, go to the wise -go to the ones you trust. Work together, you may be able to overcome this darkness.
Richard nodded, fixing his determination. After leaving the seer's cottage, he walked back through the forest in a daze of thought. He must guard Maya and his kingdom from the curse that could rip their world into shreds.
Emeraude turned Rook north through the deep forest and minutes later, the sun rose, painting the sky a pale gold. A few hours later, as Rook entered the grounds of the palace, the first light of dawn blazed over the horizon. The palace was abuzz, getting ready for the bonding ceremony. Richard steadied himself, readying himself for the trials that were to come-discarding fear and weakness.
He knew the path ahead would be fraught with struggle, but he was determined to defend those he held dear at any cost. A gloomy prophecy might have overshadowed his future, but Richard Thorn was a warrior by spirit. And he would do everything in his power to make sure that the radiance of Eldoria would not fade.
