CHAPTER FOUR Sadie felt like screaming as she looked down at the body on the slab in front of Pete, the local Medical Examiner. Like most MEs that she had met, he had a clinical, stoic air about him, and was so used to seeing the dead that it was humdrum to him. Just another day at the office. When Sadie had seen him inspect other bodies, the examiner had been respectful but detached, not seeming personally fazed in the slightest. And living in Alaska, he no doubt would have seen bodies that had been killed by animals before. Bears, mostly. But even Pete looked sick to his stomach at this one. This body was something else. There was a thudding in her ears as she tried to focus on what Pete was saying, and she knew that she would be seeing this sight in her mind’s eye for a long time. S
