The dress clung to Cassandra like it had been painted on midnight black, slit high at the thigh, strapless. She adjusted the small wire tucked between her breasts and checked the mirror one last time.
“You’re sure about this?” Morgan asked through her earpiece.
“No,” she replied honestly. “But we won’t get another chance.”
The invitation had arrived that morning, delivered in a black envelope with gold embossing: La Notte dei Leoni—The Night of the Lions. A private gathering of Moretti elites. Anonymous. Dangerous. And, apparently, Adrian wanted her there.
The venue was a Moretti-owned estate just outside the city, perched on a cliff that looked out over the ocean. Cars rolled in one by one. SUVs, Bentleys, Ferraris, vehicles driven by men and women who wore money like armor.
Cassie stepped out of her government-issued black car and adjusted her mask, a delicate lace thing that covered half her face. Eyes watched her as she entered. Men whispered. Women sized her up.
She wasn’t part of this world, but tonight, she’d blend. She had to.
And then he appeared.
Adrian.
Dressed in a tailored black tux, no tie, shirt open just enough to be criminal. His eyes drank her in.
“You wore my favorite color,” he said with a smirk.
“You didn’t give me a dress code.”
“You didn’t need one.”
He took her arm, his touch electrifying. “Come. Let me show you what it means to live beneath the empire.”
The estate was lit in soft gold and crimson, wine poured freely, and laughter echoed in every corridor. Cassie noted every camera, every exit, every suspicious glance. But Adrian’s presence kept her grounded, dangerous, magnetic, impossible to ignore.
He led her to a balcony overlooking the sea. The wind teased her hair, his fingers sliding slowly along her exposed spine.
“You’re quiet,” he said.
“I’m working,” she said under her breath, a half-truth.
“Always,” he murmured, brushing his lips just behind her ear.
She stiffened.
“You’re playing a game you can’t win, Cassandra.”
She turned to face him. “What game is that?”
“Pretending you’re not mine.”
For a moment, she forgot everything. Her training. Her oath. Her badge.
But then the moment shattered.
A shrill scream cut through the music. People rushed toward the grand foyer. Adrian’s body tensed beside her.
Cassie followed, heels clicking against marble.
The body lay at the bottom of the stairs.
A man. Late thirties. One of Moretti’s captains. Cassie had seen his face on a case file.
Blood pooled around his head, soaking the expensive rugs.
Adrian crouched beside him. Then stood slowly.
Cassie edged closer, her heart pounding.
The dying man reached out, grabbed her wrist with bloodied fingers.
And whispered, “Il Leone è lui... The Lion is him.”
His eyes rolled back. He was gone.
Cassie froze.
Il Leone.
The codename of the man behind the Moretti assassinations. The one at the top of the hit list. The most brutal of them all.
Adrian.
The FBI van went silent as her mic caught every word.
Temple’s voice finally cut in. “Get out. Now.”
But she couldn’t move.
Adrian turned slowly. Something unreadable passed through his eyes.
He stepped toward her. “Come with me.”
She backed away.
“Cassie...” His voice broke.
“I need to go.”
He let her pass, but his voice followed her.
“You don’t want to know who I really am.”
She stopped.
“Too late.”
Back at HQ, chaos reigned.
“You heard it,” Temple barked. “The Lion is him. Adrian Moretti is our guy.”
Cassie sat in the corner, numb.
Her body still felt his touch. Her lips still tingled from his kiss. But her mind screamed the truth: she’d slept with the very monster they were hunting.
“We move tomorrow night,” Temple said. “We raid the estate. You get him talking before that, Blake, or we take him down hard.”
She nodded, her voice hollow. “Understood.”
But inside, she wasn’t sure if she could.
Because despite everything… part of her didn’t want him to be guilty.
And a much darker part? Wanted him one last time, before everything exploded.
