THE FIRST DEEP

---- CHAPTER 4: They say, _"The water that is too sweet is first tested with one finger, not the whole mouth."_ In 2021, I did not test with one finger. I dipped my whole hand. And the soup burnt me. By June 2021, I was living fully on L.O.W — Living On Whispers. Those whispers told me: Reed is too dark. Reed is too short. You are taller than him by one inch. What will your friends say? Choose light skin, choose slim, choose sexy. And I listened. God forgive me, I listened. Jamie knew how to use my L.O.W. He would say, "You are too fine for a dark man." He would say, "Light plus light makes beautiful babies." S.I.N — Shine Intoxicates Negatively. His slim body had no chest, no arms, no wall to hide behind, but his words were sweet like sugar that has no food value. Reed, on the other hand, said nothing about skin. He just came. Every Tuesday and Friday, his massive body would appear in our compound with that admirable shape — wide back, thick thighs, arms that could carry two buckets at once. He brought food. He brought presence. He brought R.E.S.T — Real Earnest Steady Tenderness. One day he brought katogo still steaming. He said, "Eat, lastborn. You have lost weight thinking too much." One inch shorter, but his body made the small stool look like a throne. Jamie never brought food. He brought mirror. He brought his phone. He brought "come to my place." That Saturday, I went. Not because I loved him. Because I wanted to prove the whispers wrong. I wanted to feel chosen by the light one, so I could finally feel beautiful. His room was as I told you — thin mattress on the floor, no body in it. No warmth. No kitchen. Only lotion and a mirror where he checked his light face more than he checked mine. He pulled me with those thin fingers. And for a second I compared — Jamie's fingers were like sticks, Reed's palm was like a plate. One could scratch, one could hold. He said, "You are mine today." I said nothing. My heart was beating like a drum with a hole. *This is D.I.P #1 — Delusion Intoxicates Painfully.* What happened there was not love. It was emptiness touching emptiness. His slim body on top of mine felt like nothing — no weight, no safety, no cover. Just bone. Just hurry. Just a boy who wanted to finish and go back to his mirror. After, he stood up quickly. He did not look at me. He looked at his own light skin in the mirror and said, "You are sweet." Not "are you okay?" Not "my lastborn." Just "you are sweet" — like I was sugar he tasted and finished. I walked home that evening feeling lighter than air, but not in a good way. Like something had been scooped out of me. Like my own soup had lost salt. And who was waiting near our gate? Reed. His massive, admirable body leaning on the fence, patiently. His dark skin shining with evening sweat. He had come from work. He saw me and his face lit up. He said, "Lastborn, I waited. I brought you Rolex, still hot." He opened his big palm and stretched it to me. That warm, rough, honest palm. I could not touch it. Because my hand still smelled like the empty soup. And I was ashamed. I hid my hand behind my back and said, "I'm tired. I'm just tired." He looked at his open palm for one long second, then closed it slowly. Massive men don't force. That is their power. He just said, "Okay. But next time you are tired, be tired with me. Don't be tired alone." Then he placed the Rolex on the fence and left. His massive body walking away slowly, his shoulders a little low. I stood there holding his warm Rolex, crying without tears, because I had just learned the proverb is true: *When a finger dips in two soups, it spoils both — it makes the good soup feel betrayed, and the bad soup taste like shame.* That night, my whispers finally became quiet. And for the first time, I heard my own voice. It said, "Estella, you want to go back to the massive one." But was his palm still open? ****_That is where Chapter 5 begins — The Return._ ---****
