The fire rained down on the crumbling sanctuary, the roar of the beast making the walls quake. It was only a matter of time before it got to me, and I knew I was running out of time. I gathered what things I could and headed for the door when the ceiling above me collapsed, blocking any path to salvation I may have had. I stumbled back to avoid the fiery mess, my gaze drifting to the gaping hole above me and my heart sank. Black eyes stared back at me, nostrils flaring, smoking trailing from it's barely open mouth. I could see my reflection in its hues, and could barely recognize my soot covered face. "Why don't you run?" The thing hissed at me, pushing its head through the opening as much as it could. "I will not." I replied, my voice unsteady. "Why?" Its voice made the shelter shake and I feared it would collapse at any moment. "You will kill me if I run, you will kill me if I don't. Why waste the energy if I'm going to die either way?" I tried to look away but couldn't find the strength. The eyes narrowed and it pushed closer to me; I was mere feet from its snout and could smell fire and ash on its breath. "What do you know of my processes?" He questioned. "Only what I've seen. How could I know anything else?" I responded, squashing the nearly overwhelming fear to just cut and run. "Humans know nothing of this land. You came to conquer and ruin, instead it is I who have ruined you." He seemed amused by this, chuckling as he tried to get closer but the hole he created was too small for him to squeeze through. "Not all humans are the same. It is ignorant of you to think you know all there is to know about a species you seem overjoyed to destroy." As soon as the words left my mouth I knew then that I was going to die, but it was alright, it was always going to end this way. The creature growled and withdrew his head disappearing through the hole in the ceiling. I closed my eyes and awaited the fiery death I knew he would give me, but nothing came. Several seconds passed with nothing but the sound of the wind through the destroyed village, and I opened my eyes again. Standing before me was a man in black armor that looked of scales, inky black hair and hues darker than the deepest abyss. "You know nothing." It spoke, approaching me slowly, a look of distaste etched across his features. "But you will." Everything went black.
