Scene Seven: A Seat at the Master's Table

1012 Words
I followed Margaret from my room, her footsteps quiet against the polished wood floors as we made our way through the endless corridors of Ravenscroft Manor. Wall sconces and candelabras cast a warm golden glow through the hallways, their flames dancing across portraits of solemn faces that seemed to watch us pass. We descended the grand staircase and continued toward a pair of towering oak doors. Margaret paused before them, smoothing her apron before pushing one door open just enough to step inside. "Miss Hawthorne has arrived." She dipped into a graceful curtsy before turning back to me with a gentle smile. "This is where I leave you." Before I could thank her, she slipped away, leaving me standing alone. Taking a quiet breath, I stepped into the dining room. My breath caught. The room was magnificent. A table stretched nearly the length of the room, draped in crisp white linen and decorated with towering arrangements of white roses, ivy, and polished silver candelabras whose dozens of candles bathed the room in a warm, flickering glow. Fine silverware gleamed beside delicate china trimmed with gold. Ancient oil portraits lined the walls, their painted eyes seeming almost alive in the candlelight. Servants moved gracefully around the room, setting dishes into place with practiced precision. The entire scene looked less like dinner and more like something from another century. I must have become completely absorbed in taking it all in because I didn't notice Sebastian until his voice sounded beside me. "Beautiful, isn't it?" I jumped, pressing a hand against my chest before letting out an embarrassed laugh. "I'm terribly sorry," he said, genuine concern touching his warm brown eyes. "I didn't mean to frighten you." "Oh, no." I smiled, shaking my head. "You're perfectly fine. I just... startle easily." His expression softened. "I've also been known to drift off from time to time." A hint of amusement touched his lips. "So I've noticed." He offered me his arm. "Shall we?" I slipped my hand through the crook of his elbow, allowing him to escort me toward the table. He pulled out my chair before I could reach for it myself. "You look lovely in green," he said. "Has anyone ever told you that?" Warmth crept into my cheeks. "Oh... thank you." I glanced down at the emerald silk. "No, I don't believe anyone ever has." The faintest smile tugged at the corner of his mouth before he took the seat across from me. As though waiting for some invisible signal, he lifted two fingers ever so slightly. Within seconds, servants appeared from every direction. Crystal glasses were filled with sparkling water. Fresh bread was placed between us alongside butter whipped into delicate rosettes. Aromatic dishes followed one after another, each plated with astonishing care. The scent alone made my stomach realize just how hungry I was. Sebastian waited until the servants had stepped away before speaking. "Your grandfather mentioned you were attending university." "I was." The words carried more sadness than I intended. "This was supposed to be my final year. I only had a few months left before graduating." A shadow crossed his face. It lasted only a heartbeat, but I caught it. "I imagine this has all been... rather disruptive." I offered a small laugh. "That's one way to put it." "What were you studying?" "Finance." His eyebrows lifted with quiet interest. "I had accepted an internship with a firm in the city after graduation." I traced a finger around the rim of my glass. "I'd spent years working toward it." His gaze remained fixed on me, thoughtful. "And now?" I smiled sadly. "Now I'm sitting in a manor I've never heard of, preparing to marry a man I met only a few hours ago." A soft chuckle escaped him. "When you say it aloud, it does sound rather extraordinary." "You think?" "I do." His smile faded, replaced by something gentler. "I am truly sorry your plans were taken from you." There wasn't pity in his voice. Only sincerity. Something about that made the ache in my chest ease ever so slightly. "Thank you." Silence settled comfortably between us as we sampled the first course. Eventually, curiosity won. "So..." Sebastian looked up. "This arranged marriage." He rested his utensils neatly on his plate. "Yes?" "How exactly does this work?" He considered the question before answering. "We will marry... when the time is right." I frowned. "And when is that?" "When you understand the life that has become yours." I blinked. "I'm sorry..." I laughed softly. "I don't think that answered my question." "I know." His calm smile never faltered. "Some things cannot be explained all at once." "Because they're dangerous?" His eyes lingered on mine. "Because they require understanding before explanation." That somehow confused me even more. I opened my mouth to ask another question before deciding against it. Somehow, I already knew I'd receive another beautifully worded non-answer. Instead, I tried something else. "How did our families know each other?" For the first time since dinner began, Sebastian looked away. His gaze drifted toward one of the old portraits hanging above the fireplace. "Our families have been connected for many generations." "Business?" "In part." "Friendship?" "In a manner of speaking." I sighed. "You're very good at this." "At what?" "Answering questions without actually answering them." A quiet laugh escaped him. "I've had many years of practice." "I noticed." His smile lingered. "I promise there will come a day when your questions are answered." "And until then?" "You will simply have to trust me." Trust. The word echoed through my mind. Trust a stranger. Trust a man I'd known less than a day. Trust a family wrapped in secrets. It sounded impossible. Yet as I looked across the candlelit table, meeting those warm brown eyes that held no trace of mockery or impatience, I found myself wanting to believe him. That realization unsettled me far more than any mystery hidden within Ravenscroft Manor. Because trust was never something I gave easily. Especially not to the man I was destined to marry.
