Chapter 16…Monster in the Driveway
The rest of it happened pretty fast and was a kind of coming together of several things in a way that made me think later. And after giving it some thought, I decided destiny must have written the end to satisfy herself—that is, if destiny is a she.
Anyhow, my first concern was about Gina. Her face was filled with terror. She was so scared that she didn’t even have the courage to run to me for protection.
Pete and Doc Tom had dropped to the floor in one corner, perfect pictures of exhaustion. Dad had turned his attention to the machine, going into conference with Gabe and Lee and Dave without stopping to say hello.
I realized from the way they acted that there were problems. I heard Gabe say, “We overestimated the power charge. It’s not draining off.”
