9 “Inmate White. It’s time to go. Leave the sheets on the bed.” Jason could not sleep as he had been awake since 3 a.m. It was hard for him to believe that two months in the county jail had already passed. He was excited to leave jail, which had not been a pleasant experience. The guards moved Jason three times after his first two cellmates beat him up—Jason had not given them the soup that he had bought with the few dollars his lawyer had put on his account for the canteen store. Yet leaving jail meant that Jason had to face the real world—a world that viewed him not only as a nutty professor but a convicted criminal. The guard escorted Jason through the compound.
