As I sat in county jail for a month and thought about how my life would be an uphill battle from then on, another battle was occurring thousands of miles away on the streets of Mexico. The Mexican government launched an all-out war against drug trafficking and organized crime. In 2006, Mexico’s president began the government’s war on drugs. He sought to increase security and combat the increasing number of criminal organizations operating in the country. President Felipe Pastrana deployed the military to the streets to combat organized crime groups as he did not have high levels of trust in the police.
