Jason, Gordo, and I flew commercial from Miami to El Salvador. We had arranged a meeting with the new president of El Salvador, Jaime González, a forty-four-year-old member of the left-wing Farabundo Martí National Alliance party. González was a former military commander who rose his way through the ranks. He later served as a senator and had been tapped by the party to run for president. He ran on a platform of law and order, as El Salvadorans had become tired of the high levels of gang-related violence and crime. González ran on a tough-on-crime platform, as sixty percent of El Salvadorans believed that the security situation in the country was worsening.
During his inauguration, he laid out his plan for the country during a fifty-minute speech. “El Salvador is a beautiful country.
