Chapter forty four: Silver's Chaos

1930 Words
Silver Cassano believes he was in the state of dreaming. Tears ran down through his manly cheeks as she look at the young girl who was staring at her, smiling with her young and angelic face. “Do you miss me, brother?” asked the woman. Silver want to step his feet. He want to move his legs. He want to come towards that young child, hug her. Tight. But he cannot. His whole body was so weak that by one wrong move, he might shatter and turn into pieces of a broken glass. He cannot believe what he was seeing. She can see her own sister. Alive. In flesh; not only in the smiling pictures placed at his room’s bedside table. “Mary.” Silver felt different as he called his sister's name. It felt different, for he knew someone would answer. That her sister would answer. “Yes, big brother?” said Mary. New batch of tears ran out of Silver's eyes as he heard Mary calling her. It felt so true. Mary was wearing a white dress, a blood-red rose in her hand, a pink ribbon tying her hair, and a silver necklace that he had given so that his sister would always be reminded of him by just looking at the color of that accessory in her neck. Mary was the dearest woman in his life. Being the only sister Silver had, he treasured Mary more than anyone else in the world. Their parents were both businessmen. A successful personality in the field of real estate. With that, Silver grew being detached to their parents. Or more so, his parents being detached of him. As if he was just born so that they could have a child. An heir to their business. Just like that. Nothing more affectionate, nothing more than bearing their last names. When the world blessed Silver a sister, he made sure she won't experience what he has been experiencing in the seemingly cruel mansion that they were living at. He took care of his sister, loved her the most. He stood as if he was the father of that young sweet girl the God had blessed him. When someone was doing bad things to his sister, he was there—the big brother—who would protect her, ready to punch anyone with his strong fists. He was forced to do things that most mothers has been doing to their child. He did that just so she could let Mary feel that she was being loved. That there is nothing missing at her. That even their parents seems not to care at them in some ways, the love of a big brother is all enough. He completed Mary’s happiness. But more than that, Mary completed him as well. Until that one incident. That incident wherein he found out that he was still weak. That he was not yet ready to sacrifice his own life for his sister. That he’s a coward hiding only in the façade of a ‘big brother’. But he was actually not. “Silver, do you miss me?” asked Mary. Her smile were still attached at her lips as she asked that question. Silver nodded. Yet, he wiped his tears with the use of the sleeves of his own coat. “I badly miss you, Mary.” Silver’s voice were broken. He shook his head as it became blurry with more tears trickling out of his eyes. He should not believe to what was currently happening. That girl, was just a fraud Mary. He knew that. He knew that everything that is happening right now, it was all a sort of trick from this game. But he cannot stop his own emotions. By just looking at the young girl, he cannot stop himself to wish that it was all true. That the girl staring at him was all but true. When Mary was still alive, they used to go in different places. They used to travel, discover beautiful places, seek adventure, take photos, and enjoy every bits of moment. But every beautiful memories they have was instantly flushed away by that one single moment. One single moment that determined Mary's death. They were strolling at a city. It was a beautiful place. Even though pollution is widely felt because of different vehicles running along the road, they found beautiful spots to take pictures; they tasted delicious streetfoods just beside the roads; met few wonderful people; witnessed a scenic spot; and dine in a well-known restaurant. They did all of those not knowing that by the end of the day, ten of the deep night, someone is waiting them at an isolated road. Soon as Silver saw the man wearing coat, mask and a cap, he knew that they were at risk. He looked at the left and right, but no one was around. The night was already deep, and people might have been staying in their own warm home—not knowing that two pitiful man and a young girl is at the brink of dying. Silver was about to drag Mary for a run, but the man whose face is coved, showed a gun from his pocket. “Better not, lad,” said the dangerous man. Instead of running, Silver attempted to shout for help. But the man read through it, and shot Silver's feet with his gun who had no loud ring. A silencer was attached through it. Silver gasped in pain as he sat on the ground, clutching his wounded feet. “Silver, are you okay?” asked her sister—Mary. The young child knew what was happening. Tears are at the edge of falling from her eyes as she look at Silver who was trying to suppress the pain at his feet. “I—I'm okay, Mary. Do not worry.” He then looked at the man who shot him. “What do you want from us?” he asked. “Money. All of your possessions that I will find interesting and with value,” answered the evil man. “Take all of our money, our phones, even ATMs. Just . . . let us live.” The man then laughed insultingly. “This was easy!” then another laugh. “Very well, then.” Two more men that was masked and coated in disguises, had appeared in the scenario. Accomplices. They went near Silver and Mary and, grabbed all of the valuable possessions that they have. Silver prayed hard in his head to let them be safe. To be okay. To continue enjoying the life. He wished his pray would be heard. Mary showed toughness at that moment. Tears might have been flowing out of her eyes, but she kept the cries and the sobs. She stared at the men who was counting the money that they found in their wallets. “N—Now, do what you have promised. Let us get out of here, safe,” Silver then demanded. The three masked men looked at each other. Then they laugh. The night blew a cold swarm of mist that made Silver shiver. From a far, the flickering of lights felt like as if they were inside a horror movie. And the man's laughs were the evil phantoms of the dreadful night. “Very well then, eh, stand up,” said one of the man. Silver and Mary stood up. Silver then tried to forget the pain that was piercing his feet. He was surprised that he easily managed to do it. Perhaps, it was because of the adrenaline given by the fear that was now suffocating him. Mary hugged him at his side, now shivering because of fear. What was happening at them was traumatic. “Turn your back at us,” the man instructed. He even motioned the mouth of his gun in a circling motion. Silver swallowed the lump of fear forming in his throat. Slowly, both Silver and Mary turned at the other side of the road. It revealed one long, straight, and isolated road. The whole place was dark. Only few streetlights were lighting the path. ‘Please, let us live. At least my sister.’ Silver begged in his mind. Sweat was trickling too much at his neck, his back, chest, and nape. His heart pounded hard. “Now, walk. And never return.” They followed the man's order. Silver stepped his feet one by one, as if stiffed from being frozen, while guiding his sister. Mary hugged him tighter. Twenty steps. They did twenty steps. His mind was counting every steps that they were doing. “Silver, I'm scared,” confessed by Mary. “Shhh… we'll be alright.” He just hoped. A hundred more steps, and they will be safe. He knew that just at the next block, a party was happening. There's a lot of people there by which they can ask for help. They just need to get there. They just need to turn at that block whom his eyes can see. He can ask for help. They will be safe. They will be— “Uh-uh, we're just kidding.” A flash of extreme coldness ran through Silver's spine. He heard the laugh of the three men just at their behind. Mary now cannot contain the fear she was feeling. She now cried. Hard. And Silver felt helpless. He never imagined that this thing would be happening to them. He never realized that this unfortunate event might come through, and haunt them. He then realized that him being Mary's big brother is not a big feat he could be boasting of. Because he was not the ideal big brother. He could not protect her from the monstrous intent of the men laughing in their front. One man grabbed him by the arm, the other grabbed Mary. “No! Please, don't do this, please!” “Silver!” Mary was crying hard. She was forcing herself to get rid of the tight grip of the man, but was unable to. Her face was all wet from her tears, and the look of fear was all written in her features. “Please!” Silver begged. He cannot do anything, he cannot act out and save themselves. All he can do is to beg. To pray—by which it seems that no one is listening. “Uh-Uh. Just for fun,” said the man who was holding the gun. “We want to see blood bursting out of a human's head tonight.” He then shrugged. “We just have to pick who among you can be the best candidate.” “Please,” Silver begged again. “Not my sister.” He was feeling weak. His eyesight are turning blurry. The world was spinning. His legs were being cooked. “Eh, your sister?” the man asked, pointing the gun at her as he asked. Then a jolt of silenced gun. Then Mary stopped crying. Her eyes bulging in shock, in horror, in fear, in disbelief. Blood ran down from her forehead where a hole popped as the bullet of the gun penetrated. Silver, for a second, spaced out, unable to assist everything that is happening. And when Mary's image sank to him, a loud, horrified scream was forced out of his throat. A scream of anger. A scream of melancholy. “MARYYYY!” He felt something hard hitting his back. Then his sight darkened. He fell unconscious.
