“I bet that’s him” James says, lifting his eyebrows in a teasing manner
“It’s an unknown number, we can’t be so sureeee!” I say while unlocking my phone
“Go on Mrs I don’t want to get my hopes up” James mimicks
“Ohhhh!” I squeal “It’s the guy that got the perfume he didn’t want because of your marketing skills, so how about I make you an ultimatum, you come work for me, as my secretary, and in return, you get paid… Maybe half the price of the perfume, or a tad bit less, depends” I read out, squealing in excitement to James
“OMG!!! Say yes! Say yes!”
“That’ll make me sound desperate if I reply immediately you know” I say and James face palms himself
“You know he could get another person to do the work with the snap of his fingers right?”
“Well, he won’t!” I say, trying to assure myself
“Oh, I’ll love to see you lose this job because of a pride that you’re not even meant to have!” He says and I could hear the anger in his voice.
Well, James and I have always been coworkers but more importantly, he was like the brother I wish I had, even though I didn’t get to experience what having one was like when I was growing up.
With so much sincerity, I say, “Fine I’ll text him, but what about you?”
“So you’re not about to take a million dollar job because you’re worried about me? Girl be for real please!” James said, not forgetting to give me a stink eye.
“Alright fine!”
“Well, I’ll be pleased to work as your secretary!” I say loudly while texting it.
“Now that’s my girl! I’m so proud of you!” James squeals
“Well, now we wait. Let’s get back to work! I guess opportunities do come on a platter of gold”
James smiles and we get back to work.
Customers come in and out and we serve them, attending to them. We made such a huge success and I was proud…
We took our lunch break and our boss had come into the office.
“I saw the alert, which one of you was responsible for such big sales?” Mr Evan’s asked, the owner of the perfume shop.
“James and I” I say
“Nope, it was solely Ariel!” James says, smiling like a proud elder brother.
“Well thank you, keep up the work and you’ll be sure to get a raise” he says and walks into his office
“So when are you going to tell him you quit?” James asks
“I think I’ll just ghost and leave you know”
“Don’t do that! Into his office now, James orders”
“Fine!!!” I groan
I place a soft knock on the door and Mr Evan’s gestures for me to come into the office
“So what’s going on Ariel?” He asks
“Oh, well I want to resign! I had an offer that I need to take up” I say, and for some reason, I was scared of his reaction
“You deserve so much better than whatever you had been receiving here, So what was the offer?” He asks
“A secretary for the Maxwell company. To aid in their marketing” I say
“I always knew with those marketing skills, you were destined to be greater than just a salesperson” he smiles, proud!
“Thank you sir” I smile
“So when does work commence?” He asks
“Tomorrow I hope!”
“Go be great!” He says and I leave the office
“How did it go?” James asks
“Better than I ever imagined!” I smile.
It was time to close and go home. I said my goodbyes to James..
“I’ll see you around!” He smiled, but I could see something in his eyes, fear? or pride?
“I’ll see you around!” I smile at him and we part.
I decide to place a call to Ivana, to find out where she was, so I could tell her the good news
“Her Ivana” I say through the phone
“Hey….. I’m home… where are you at?” She asks, sounding really tired
“I’m on my way home…. I need to get dressed for the bartender job!” I sigh tiredly
“Okay babe, I’m waiting anyways” she says and I hang up.
I get home to see an exhausted Ivana lying on the bed and sometimes I wonder how the work of a librarian could be so exhausting.
“How was work? Any opportunities come by?” I ask her
“Honestly, I don’t believe all these opportunities just come by anymore, and work was exhausting”
“Girl! How could work be exhausting, you barely even have to talk, you just sit and read a book!” I say confused, while shaking my head like an iguana to really express my confusion
“That’s the whole point!!!! I get tired of sitting and reading a book! It’s so quiet” She exclaims, fake crying
“Oh well, I got something that could lift your mood up you know” I say and she sits up to look at me
“Please tell me what you believe in actually came through for you” she sighs, lazily throwing chips into her mouth
“Well yes! The CEO Maxwell offered me a job at his company!” I say excitedly expecting her to dance or something
“O wow!” She says in a duh tone
“Oh! I expected something more than that”
“Well, it’s another job, I thought it would be that a billionaire saw you and wanted to take care of you or something”
“They are almost the same, Ivana! Ugh! Don’t be a b***h about it, I was really excited for this, and even more excited to tell you”
“Oh my bad! It’s just that there’s always an ultimatum, he would always want something! He’s not all that too”
“Ivana! CEO Maxwell is not all that???? He’s literally your perfect god!” I say shocked
“Wait… OMG!!!! Maxwell???????? f**k why didn’t you say so?” She exclaims jumping up from the couch!
“The f**k! b***h I did”
“Oh my goodness! This is great news!!! Ugh finally” she exclaims happily
“I know righttttt? So no bar job tonight and anymore!!!! Oh yessss!”
“Nah, I’m still going for work tonight” I say, earning a disgusting look from Ivana
“Ariel when do you start working for Maxwell?” She asks ignoring me
“Should be tomorrow,” I say unsure
“Should be? He didn’t give you the details?”
“Oh f**k! Been so exhausted with work, I forgot to check!”
“Come into work as early as 7, no later than that. You have a presentation I need to put you through scheduled for 10. Send the address, my personal driver would pick you up!” I read out
