The bright morning sunlight filtered sharply through the plastic blinds of Maya's cozy dorm room, casting long golden bars across her wooden desk where her laptop sat waiting with a blinking cursor. Despite staying up late into the night replaying every single second of the previous evening's events in her head, she felt surprisingly energized as she took a slow sip of her hot morning coffee.
Her phone buzzed loudly against the wooden surface, instantly breaking her concentration. A single text message flashed brightly on the locked screen from an unsaved number she already knew by heart: Morning, scholar. Don't forget to actually eat breakfast before you drown yourself in your macroeconomics notes today.
A soft, involuntary smile tugged at the corners of Maya's lips, warming her chest. She quickly typed out a witty reply, teasing him right back about his own notoriously terrible study habits and skipped meals, before setting the phone facedown on her desk. For the very first time all semester, the intimidating mountain of coursework waiting for her didn't feel quite so heavy or overwhelming.
With a renewed sense of purpose, she clicked open her document file, ready to tackle the day's academic tasks with a completely fresh perspective.
