The first alerts came quietly, a flicker on my phone I almost ignored. Then the notifications multiplied, an endless flood of messages, screenshots, headlines, and social feeds. My chest tightened the instant I read the words;

I froze and immediately stopped reading, my fingers gripping the edge of the table until my knuckles turned white.
