The numbers on my screen were beautiful in their destruction. Wakes's stock had dropped twelve points in six hours.
The Holbrook merger—sixteen billion dollars had been officially "postponed pending further review." Senator Morrison's office had issued a statement distancing the senator from "certain business associates" after photos surfaced of him and Wakes at what looked like a very private, very expensive dinner.
