Chapter 7: Before the Throne

1183 Words
The grand hall had never been so silent. It wasn’t the peaceful kind of silence. It was tense. Heavy. Waiting. Seraphina Vale stood at the center of the royal court, every pair of eyes fixed on her. Nobles lined both sides of the vast hall, their expressions ranging from curiosity to open hostility. Whispers moved like shadows through the room. “That’s her…” “The one the king claimed…” “She doesn’t belong here…” Seraphina kept her head high, her posture straight despite the weight of their stares. She refused to look weak. Refused to give them the satisfaction. But she felt it. Judgment. Resentment. Danger. The massive doors behind her opened with a deep echo. And instantly— Silence fell. Not forced. Not controlled. Absolute. King Kaelith Draven entered. His presence alone shifted the entire atmosphere. Power radiated from him, cold and undeniable. Every noble lowered their head as he walked forward, his expression unreadable. Seraphina didn’t move. Didn’t bow. Didn’t look away. His eyes found hers immediately. And for a brief moment— Everything else disappeared. Then— He turned and took his place on the throne. “Speak,” he commanded. One of the nobles stepped forward, an older man dressed in rich robes, his face tight with controlled anger. “Your Majesty,” he began, bowing deeply, “we demand an explanation.” The word demand echoed dangerously. Kaelith’s gaze sharpened. “You forget your place.” The noble stiffened but continued. “With all due respect, sire, the entire court witnessed your… declaration.” Murmurs spread through the hall. Seraphina’s fingers curled slightly at her sides. “This woman,” the noble continued, gesturing toward her, “is an outsider. Unknown. Unverified. And now, suddenly, under royal protection?” His tone hardened. “Claimed by the king himself.” The words carried accusation. Challenge. Kaelith leaned back slightly in his throne, his expression darkening. “And your point?” he asked. Another figure stepped forward. Lady Vaeloria. Elegant. Beautiful. And dangerous. Her gaze locked onto Seraphina with thinly veiled hatred. “Your Majesty,” she said smoothly, her voice calm but sharp, “this is not just about curiosity.” She paused. “It is about the stability of the kingdom.” Her eyes flickered toward Seraphina again. “Strange things have begun to happen since her arrival. Whispers. Breaches. Attacks.” A calculated silence followed. “She is a risk.” Seraphina felt the weight of every word. But she didn’t flinch. Didn’t react. Kaelith’s gaze slowly shifted to Vaeloria. Cold. Unimpressed. “Careful,” he said quietly. But the warning in his voice was unmistakable. Vaeloria smiled faintly. “Or what, Your Majesty?” she asked softly. The tension in the room snapped. Danger filled the air instantly. Seraphina’s heart beat faster. This wasn’t just politics. This was power clashing openly. Vaeloria stepped closer, her gaze never leaving Seraphina. “If she is to remain here,” she continued, “then she should be tested.” A murmur of agreement spread through the nobles. “Tested?” Seraphina repeated, her voice calm but edged. Vaeloria finally looked at her directly. “Yes,” she said. “To prove she is worthy of standing in this court.” Seraphina almost laughed. Worthy? She hadn’t asked to be here. But before she could respond— Kaelith stood. The movement alone silenced the entire hall. His eyes darkened as he stepped down from the throne, his presence overwhelming, suffocating. “No.” The word was quiet. But final. Vaeloria’s smile faded slightly. “Your Majesty—” “I said no.” His voice cut through her like a blade. The air grew colder. “He doesn’t trust her,” someone whispered. “She’s manipulating him…” “She’s dangerous…” The whispers returned. Louder. Bolder. Seraphina exhaled slowly. Enough. “If they want a test,” she said suddenly, her voice clear and steady, “then give them one.” The hall fell silent again. Kaelith turned sharply toward her. His expression dark. Warning. “Seraphina,” he said, his tone low. But she didn’t back down. “If my presence is causing this much chaos,” she continued, meeting his gaze, “then let’s end it.” Vaeloria’s smile returned, satisfied. “Good,” she said softly. “A trial, then.” Kaelith’s jaw tightened. “You don’t decide that.” “But she just did,” Vaeloria replied smoothly. The tension between them was explosive. Seraphina felt it. Everyone did. Kaelith stepped closer to her, his voice dropping so only she could hear. “You don’t know what you’re agreeing to.” Her pulse raced. “Then tell me.” A pause. His eyes searched hers. Intense. Conflicted. Then— “You trust me?” he asked quietly. The question caught her off guard. Trust? She hesitated. Just for a second. Then— “I trust myself,” she replied. Something flickered in his gaze. Something dangerous. Then he turned back to the court. “Fine.” The word sent a ripple through the hall. “You want a test?” His voice dropped. “You’ll have one.” Vaeloria’s eyes gleamed. “What kind of test, Your Majesty?” Kaelith didn’t look at her. His gaze remained on Seraphina. “A survival trial.” The room went still. Completely still. Seraphina’s heart skipped. Vaeloria’s smile widened slightly. “How fitting,” she murmured. Kaelith stepped closer to Seraphina again, his voice low, controlled—but filled with something darker. “If she survives,” he said, loud enough for all to hear, “then this ends.” A pause. “And if she doesn’t,” Vaeloria added softly. Kaelith’s eyes snapped toward her. Deadly. “She will,” he said. The certainty in his voice sent a shiver through the room. Through her. Seraphina swallowed slightly. This had just become real. Very real. But she didn’t step back. Didn’t hesitate. Because something inside her had already decided. She wasn’t going to run. She wasn’t going to break. And she definitely wasn’t going to lose. Kaelith leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a whisper meant only for her. “You survive this,” he said quietly, “and no one questions you again.” Her breath caught. “And if I don’t?” she asked. His gaze darkened. “You will.” Not hope. Not doubt. Certainty. The kind that made her heart race. The kind that made her believe him. Even when she shouldn’t. The court buzzed with tension as the reality of what had just been declared settled over them. A trial. A dangerous one. And she had just stepped into it willingly. But as Seraphina lifted her chin, meeting every hostile gaze in the room— She realized something. They expected her to fail. They wanted her to fall. But they didn’t know her. And they definitely didn’t understand what they had just started. Because if there was one thing Seraphina Vale refused to do— It was lose.
