The Hidden Truth

The safe house was quiet again. But the silence felt heavy, you know. The fight was over. Elara still couldn't calm her heart every time she closed her eyes she saw that knife flashing men rushing in Adrian fighting like some kind of storm. She sat at the kitchen table hands wrapped around a cold mug of tea she hadn't touched. The shaking wouldn't stop so she kept holding it anyway tight enough her knuckles turned white. Adrian stood by the door like always. Always near exits always ready shoulders tense eyes scanning even now. His posture never relaxed not even when things seemed calm. Do you ever rest she asked softly voice barely carrying across the room. He turned just enough to meet her gaze not fully facing away from his watch. Not when danger's this close he said flatly. She looked down at her cold tea wishing she had his steel nerves his unshakable presence all she felt was small brittle like glass about to c***k. Night dragged on endlessly Elara drifting between uneasy sleep and jolting awake at phantom sounds each time Adrian's voice cut through the dark same steady words every time You're safe I'm here. Morning light brought weak warmth through dusty blinds first real comfort in days they'd been running Adrian sat across from her at breakfast silent until finally pushing his plate aside They didn't find us by chance he said eyes locked on hers. Elara blinked confused What do you mean they knew where you'd be knew exactly how to get close means someone's watching your every move he leaned forward palms flat on the table Someone thinks you know something valuable and they won't quit till they get it. Her chest tightened dizzy suddenly fingers gripping table edge I don't understand she whispered I'm nobody live quietly work my job why would anyone She felt his hand cover hers rough but warm stopping the shaking Doesn't matter why he said voice softer than she'd ever heard just matters keeping you alive till we figure this out. They left before noon new duffle bag packed quick We can't stay he said already scanning street corners as they loaded the car Where are we going Elara asked glancing back constantly expecting black SUVs Somewhere safer he answered eyes never still off-grid place I know. The cabin surprised her nestled deep in pines air sharp with resin smells Adrian moved through rooms checking windows testing locks She stood in doorway watching light filter through trees realizing how long it'd been since she breathed fresh air. That night by crackling fire she finally asked what had been burning in her throat since day one Who are you really Adrian why risk everything for a stranger his face hardened in flickering light then softened Military years ago did things that still haunt left vowed to protect people who can't protect themselves thats why I'm here why you he met her eyes unflinching Saw you scared but standing tall knew I couldn't walk away even if I wanted to. Wind whispered through pines later as she lay on lumpy couch staring at shadows ceiling Adrian kept post by door silhouette outlined against moonlit trees Thank you she murmured into dark not expecting response You don't thank me came his low rumble hours later just survive thats what matters eyes still open watching always watching but for first time since this nightmare began Elara closed hers feeling maybe survival was possible after all.
