They pulled up to the safehouse long after sunset honestly. Place was small kind of—single story with maybe three rooms total middle of nowhere really trees blocking most views from any direction I think Daniel parked around back where the road couldn’t see them told Emma stick close every second don’t wander off you know Inside looked basic but functional kitchenette living area with this beat-up couch couple bedrooms down the hall walls bare but clean enough Daniel did his usual security sweep checking every window testing door locks even looked under beds inside closets give him credit thorough as always when he finished gave her this nod like we’re good for tonight probably Emma collapsed on that old sofa looking wrecked pale under the dim bulb past few days hit her hard witness to murder multiple close calls nonstop running really Daniel sat across from her slid over a water glass waited till she stopped shaking “Are we safe here,” she asked voice barely there “For now yeah,” Daniel said not looking at her “But this isn’t permanent they’ll track us eventually” She nodded white-knuckling that glass mix of fear and anger flashing across her face “Why me though I didn’t do anything wrong” “You saw things people kill to keep quiet,” Daniel said matter-of-fact “That’s all it takes sometimes” Quiet settled heavy Daniel kept glancing at windows while Emma stared at floorboards later he rustled up canned beans and crackers from the kitchen neither talked much during dinner after she tried resting but kept seeing that dead guy’s face Adrian’s icy stare haunting her Daniel stayed up cleaning his pistol phone powered off except for quick checks paranoia protocol mind racing through options how to shield her get evidence vanish Adrian properly Midnight brought noises outside soft crunch on leaves Daniel froze by the window first nothing then movement near tree line he shook Emma awake silent hand signals passed her flashlight stayed low Back door creaked open cold air hitting his face as he swept the perimeter another snap off to his right gun up instantly “Show yourself,” he growled Nothing came back but retreating footsteps fading into woods he returned tense Emma by the window now trembling “Scouts,” he said packing gear already “Gotta move before sunrise” “Where even,” she asked voice thin “Got contacts,” he said zipping bags “Safer spot east maybe” noticed her shaking hands sat beside her “Look I need you sharp okay We get through this together but you gotta stay with me” She nodded breathing steadied some sunrise brought fresh tire tracks near the trees when they loaded up Emma finally asked “Does this ever stop” “When we make it stop,” Daniel said eyes on rearview “Running’s temporary solutions coming” Engine hummed down empty roads Emma watching tree lines realizing survival meant changing playing scared wasn’t cutting it anymore Daniel drove focused grip tight on wheel ready for whatever came next. The car kept moving for hours. Empty roads stretched out ahead except for some trucks far off. Daniel kept his foot steady on the gas while checking mirrors constantly. Emma leaned her head against the window but couldn’t sleep at all. Every little noise from the tires made her tense up around ten times worse. Around midmorning they stopped at some beat-up gas station peeling paint and just one working pump out front Daniel killed the engine and looked around real careful before saying stay put lock up tight Emma didn’t push back just watched him walk inside where some tired guy took cash for gas and snacks without much talking. Emma’s fingers dug into the door handle when she noticed that black SUV across the street dark windows nobody getting out but her chest felt like concrete anyway almost yelled for Daniel but bit her tongue instead when he came back he saw her staring followed her eyes to that vehicle his jaw went tight. Not random he mumbled slid back in started driving without even filling up hold on he said yanking the wheel hard toward the road again Emma’s stomach lurched as they peeled out. Ten minutes of quiet then boom SUV appeared in the mirror matching their speed exactly. They’re following Emma said voice shaky yeah Daniel answered flat stepping harder on the gas can’t lead them anywhere important gotta lose em first. The chase dragged on forever taking backroads through fields and woods that SUV sticking behind them like glue not too close but never dropping back either Emma held onto her seatbelt so tight her hands went white. Finally Daniel swerved onto some dirt path branches scraping metal shut off the engine get out now he barked Emma stumbled out legs wobbly Daniel grabbed their gear slammed the door without locking it yanked her into thick trees leaves crunching underfoot they ducked behind a hill waiting silent pistol ready in his hand until that SUV rolled by slow kept going after a minute. Long stretch of quiet before Daniel stood up we go deeper he said they’ll loop back soon Emma followed aching everywhere from fear woods went on forever till they hit a creek finally stopped for water you’re doing better than yesterday Daniel said filling his canteen Emma laughed dry no I’m not you didn’t scream this time he pointed out she stared at the water face pale but steady don’t wanna run forever she whispered you won’t Daniel said survival first though scanned trees again we avoid highways tonight I call someone tomorrow we move again. Emma hugged her knees knowing this forest wouldn’t hide them forever heard Daniel say Adrian’s close can feel it this might be our last shot she met his eyes didn’t look away okay let’s make it matter then.
