MY PHONE buzzed just as I was about to take my first bite of lunch. I glanced at the screen and saw Marcus' name.
For a second, I stared at his name before opening the message.
'Client emergency in Oakhaven. I need to stay here for a few days. Don't wait up for me tonight.'
Oakhaven, I almost scoff.
Instead, a quiet breath left me as I read it again, but my expression stayed calm. If anything, the message almost amused me now. Marcus was becoming lazy with his lies.
I typed my reply without hesitation.
'Take care of yourself. Don't overwork. How long will you stay there?'
His answer came quickly.
'Not sure yet. Depends on the client.'
Client? Right.
I smiled faintly and added the same warmth I always used with him.
