Marnie woke before sunrise, though she wasn’t sure what time it was. Her eyes flickered open to a dimly lit room, the sky outside the wide windows still a gentle shade between night and dawn. For a brief moment, she didn’t remember where she was. The bed felt different. The scent of the room was unfamiliar. And the silence was too heavy. Then it hit her. She was in Doctor Michael’s—no, their—condo. She was married. She was already Mrs. Co. Her heart leaped, both in disbelief and in nervous awe. The events of the previous day played like scenes from a dream—the proposal, the swift marriage, his protective embrace, his promises, the way he said “my little wife” with such certainty. She lifted her left hand slowly. The rings shimmered faintly in the early morning light. They were real.
