The First Day

754 Words
Elena stood outside Black Enterprises for the second time in as many days, clutching her bag with trembling hands. The morning air was crisp, but she barely noticed it. Her nerves were in overdrive, her mind racing with thoughts of what awaited her inside. “You’ve got this,” she muttered to herself, straightening her blazer and stepping through the revolving glass doors. The receptionist from the previous day nodded at her. “Mr. Black is expecting you. Go on up.” Her heels clicked against the polished floors as she made her way to the elevator. The ride to the 30th floor felt heavier this time, weighted by the uncertainty of her new job and her enigmatic boss. --- When she reached Adrian Black’s office, the same impeccably dressed assistant from before greeted her. “Good morning, Ms. Carter. Follow me.” The assistant handed her a sleek tablet. “Your first task is to review Mr. Black’s schedule and familiarize yourself with the current projects. He’ll call for you when he’s ready.” Elena nodded, taking the tablet and settling into a desk just outside Adrian’s office. The screen lit up with an overwhelming array of appointments, meetings, and deadlines. “Okay, you can do this,” she whispered, scrolling through the calendar. --- The sharp buzz of the intercom startled her. Adrian’s voice came through, calm and commanding. “Ms. Carter, in my office. Now.” Her stomach flipped as she hurried to his door, knocking lightly before stepping inside. Adrian sat behind his desk, his attention fixed on the screen of his laptop. He gestured to a stack of files without looking up. “These are the financial summaries for the Harper deal. Organize them by priority and flag anything that seems inconsistent.” Elena blinked, taken aback. “Inconsistent?” Adrian finally looked up, his gray eyes narrowing. “Do I need to define the word for you, Ms. Carter?” Her cheeks flushed, but she bit back a retort. “No, sir. I’ll get it done.” “Good.” He returned his attention to his laptop, dismissing her with a wave. --- Back at her desk, Elena stared at the pile of documents. She had no background in finance, but she refused to let Adrian intimidate her. Determined, she started going through the files, cross-referencing numbers and highlighting anything that seemed off. Hours passed, and the office grew quieter as the day wore on. Just as she finished organizing the last file, Adrian appeared in front of her desk. “Done already?” he asked, one eyebrow raised. “Yes,” she replied, handing him the neatly sorted stack. “I flagged three reports with discrepancies.” Adrian flipped through the files, his expression unreadable. When he finished, he set them down and looked at her. “Not bad, Ms. Carter. You’re more competent than I expected.” Elena’s jaw tightened. Was that supposed to be a compliment? Before she could respond, Adrian’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and frowned. “Cancel my 4:00 meeting,” he said, striding toward his office. Elena hesitated. “Your 4:00 is with Mr. Harper. Shouldn’t we reschedule instead?” Adrian stopped, turning to face her. “We?” he echoed, his tone laced with amusement. She swallowed. “I mean, it’s an important meeting. Rescheduling might be better than canceling outright.” A flicker of something—approval, perhaps—crossed his face. “Fine. Reschedule it. And make sure it’s the last time I have to deal with Harper’s incompetence.” As he disappeared into his office, Elena allowed herself a small smile. It wasn’t much, but it felt like a win. --- By the end of the day, Elena was exhausted but proud of herself. The work had been challenging, and Adrian Black was far from an easy boss, but she had held her ground. As she packed up to leave, the assistant from earlier approached her. “Word of advice,” she said, her tone cautious. “Don’t get too comfortable. Mr. Black has a way of testing people—especially the ones he hires on a whim.” Elena frowned, her grip tightening on her bag. “Thanks for the warning.” She stepped into the elevator, her thoughts churning. If Adrian Black was testing her, she’d prove herself worthy. No matter what it took. Little did she know, her first day was only a glimpse of the storm that was about to unfold.
