Two hours later Mosaab sat in the passenger seat of a brown 1995 Jeep Cherokee traveling north on CA-2. He could not help but be very aware of the Jeep’s cargo, and he cautioned Jorge, the Guatemalan coyote in English, their common language. “Watch the bumps.” Jorge spoke only when he had to, but Mosaab welcomed the long periods of silence during the uneventful three-hour drive north. Without uttering a word Jorge exited the highway and continued north on a narrow dirt road bordered by forest. After fifteen minutes of slow progress north, the road ended and all that Mosaab could see was a footpath that continued into the forest. “We walk,” were the first words spoken by Jorge in hours.
