Chapter 6: The Sovereign of Fortune

574 Words
The air was thick with the threat of fire. Zora, the Sovereign of Cinders, was a raging storm behind them. Kael, Sera, and Elara ran through the twisting alleyways of the city, their footsteps echoing. "She's gaining on us!" Sera said, her breath ragged. "Kael, do something!" Kael didn’t know what to do. The Mark on his hand pulsed, hot and angry. He felt a mix of Zora's burning rage, Sera’s cool shadows, and Elara’s quiet power. The different energies clashed inside him, a storm in his soul. He felt the ground tremble behind him as Zora drew closer. Without thinking, Kael raised his hand. The chaotic energy inside him burst out. It didn't form a shield of words, or a portal of shadows, or a ball of fire. Instead, it was a strange, swirling cloud of green and gold light. It shot out from his hand and hit a blank brick wall. The wall shimmered, not like water, but like a deck of cards being shuffled. The bricks turned into a strange mosaic of golden symbols. Elara gasped. "He's manipulating probability!" Sera looked at the wall, her eyes wide with surprise. "What did you do?" "I don't know!" Kael yelled. He was focused on the light he had created. It was like a new part of him, a part that felt both lucky and dangerous. The golden mosaic on the wall shifted. It showed a map of the city, and on the map, a path of golden coins leading down a side street. A second later, the map faded, leaving the wall blank again. Elara looked at him, her eyes bright with a strange mix of fear and wonder. "The Contract is drawing on a new power. Another Sovereign is near. You’ve just used the Sovereign of Fortune's power, even without her being here. The Contract is a text of fate, Kael. It’s a story of chance and choice." They ran down the path the coins had shown them. Zora’s roar was getting closer. The bricks around them glowed with heat. They turned a corner and came to a small, hidden courtyard. A woman was there, sitting at a small table. She was playing cards with herself. She had a mischievous smile, a stack of gold coins beside her, and a deck of cards that seemed to be made of light. Her hair was a wild mess of silver, and her clothes were a patchwork of rich fabrics, a mix of stolen styles. She looked up at them, her smile widening. "Well, well, well. The Key. I had a feeling you were coming. The odds were in your favor." She gestured to the card she had just placed down, which was an Ace of Blades. The symbol of the Sovereign of Words. "I am Lysandra. The Sovereign of Fortune. And my story is now bound to yours. I was just about to draw a new card." She looked at Kael. "It's your turn now. What card do you want to play?" Kael had no idea what she was talking about. He just felt the burning rage of Zora getting closer, and the strange, lucky feeling that Lysandra’s presence gave him. The Mark on his hand pulsed again, and he knew he had to choose. Not a card, but a path. A way to fight, or a way to run. And for the first time, he felt like he had a hand to play.
