Chapter 5: The Sovereign of Cinders

The tremor was a roar in Kael’s mind. The air turned hot, smelling of ash. Kael's Mark flared on his hand. A fierce, burning presence filled the room. This was not like Sera, or Elara. This one felt like a wild fire. A woman appeared in a flash of orange light. She was tall and lean, with short, spiky hair the color of rust. Her armor was made of dark, volcanic rock that smoked slightly at the seams. Her eyes were two burning embers. She looked at Kael and her face twisted in a snarl. "The Key. You're a fake," she growled, her voice a crackle of burning embers. "The Contract would not choose a brute like you. You will be undone." Sera moved fast. She pulled a few small black spheres from her satchel. "She's the Sovereign of Cinders. Her name is Zora. She's all fire and no sense. Get behind me!" Zora raised her hand. A ball of fire, hot and bright, appeared in her palm. It grew quickly, hissing and crackling. She threw it at Kael. Elara stepped in front of him. "A shield of Truth!" she chanted, her voice suddenly strong. The scrolls she carried unrolled in the air around her, forming a wall of shimmering, glowing script. The fire from Zora hit the wall of words and fizzled out. The scrolls turned to ash and fell to the floor. Zora’s eyes widened. "Words? Against fire? A weak move, scholar!" She stomped her foot. Cracks appeared on the floor, and a pillar of black smoke shot up. Kael felt a new surge of energy from the Mark. It was Zora’s power, hot and angry. But it was also the cool, cynical force of Sera and the calm, steady presence of Elara. All three presences mixed inside him, a storm he could not control. "Stop fighting me!" he heard Sera’s voice in his head. "Use our power!" Kael didn’t know how. He just felt the hot power rise from his chest. He held out his hand. He meant to create a shadow, but something else happened. The hot energy combined with Sera’s shadowy power and Elara’s words. A wave of shimmering, smoky air shot from his hand, not at Zora, but at the crates and barrels. The objects started to move on their own, pushed by an unseen force. They flew at Zora, forming a wall between her and Kael. Zora was caught off guard. "What is this?" she yelled. Sera grabbed Kael's arm. "That was… messy. But it worked. Come on, while she's busy!" She pulled Kael and Elara through another small, dark portal. This time, they appeared in an alleyway far from the first. The air was cool, smelling of rain. Kael was gasping for air. His body ached. "What did I do?" "You used the Contract's power," Sera said. She looked impressed, but also worried. "You used my shadows and Elara’s words to move objects. That's… unexpected. A brute like you shouldn't be able to do that." Elara looked at Kael with a new kind of awe. "The Contract does not just amplify our power. It combines them through you. You are the nexus." Kael’s hand was still hot. The Mark was visible again, glowing fiercely. He looked at Sera. "I thought you cloaked it." Sera sighed. "I did. But your use of the power made it flare. The cloak is broken now. Zora will find us again. Soon." Kael looked at his hand. He was more of a target than ever. And now he knew why. The power inside him was dangerous. He had to learn how to control it, or he would be undone. "We need a new plan," Sera said. She looked at Elara, then at Kael. "We need to find a way to stop Zora. And the next ones who come after us."
