The Confession

655 Words
The press conference dominated the news all weekend. Some praised Daniel for facing the media instead of hiding. Others insisted there was more to the story. The headlines were divided. But one photograph appeared on almost every front page. Daniel and Amina standing side by side, refusing to let go of each other's hands. --- Sunday afternoon, the Okello family gathered for lunch at Grandma's house. The dining room was filled with laughter as relatives congratulated the couple on handling the media so gracefully. Grandma beamed with pride. "My grandson finally found someone who stands beside him instead of behind him." Amina smiled, though guilt tugged at her heart. Every kind word from Grandma reminded her that their marriage was still based on a contract. --- After lunch, Grandma asked Amina to help her in the garden. They walked slowly among rows of roses blooming in shades of red, white, and pink. Grandma stopped beside an old wooden bench. "Sit with me." Amina obeyed. Grandma reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. "I've been waiting for the right moment." She opened it. Inside was a beautiful gold necklace with a heart-shaped pendant. "It belonged to my late husband." Amina's eyes widened. "I can't accept something so precious." "You can." Grandma smiled warmly. "In our family, this necklace is given to the woman who becomes part of our hearts." Amina felt tears sting her eyes. She knew she didn't deserve such kindness. Yet she couldn't bring herself to refuse. "Thank you... Grandma." Grandma fastened the necklace around her neck. "It suits you." --- From the veranda, Daniel watched the moment unfold. Grace joined him. "She already feels like part of the family." Daniel nodded quietly. "I know." Grace looked at him carefully. "May I ask you something, sir?" "You usually do." She smiled. "When did this stop being just a contract?" Daniel didn't answer immediately. His gaze remained fixed on Amina as she laughed at something Grandma had said. Finally, he spoke. "I don't know." Grace smiled to herself. "I think you do." --- Later that evening, Daniel drove Amina back to the mansion. The journey was peaceful. As they entered the house, the lights suddenly went out. The entire mansion fell into darkness. Amina gasped. "What happened?" "Probably a power outage." A clap of thunder shook the windows. Instinctively, Amina stepped closer to Daniel. "I've never liked thunderstorms." "It's all right." His voice was calm. "I'll get some candles." Moments later, the living room glowed with soft candlelight. Rain beat steadily against the windows. "It actually feels... cozy," Amina admitted. Daniel handed her a mug of hot chocolate. "I wasn't sure if you liked coffee after... our first meeting." She laughed. "I'll never live that down, will I?" "Probably not." For a while, they sat in comfortable silence. Then Amina noticed Daniel staring at the fire. "What are you thinking about?" He hesitated. "The contract." Her smile faded. "What about it?" He turned to face her. "When the year is over..." He paused. "...what do you want to do?" She hadn't expected the question. "I've never thought that far ahead." "I have." Their eyes met. For the first time since they met, the future felt uncertain—not because of the contract, but because of what it might mean to end it. Before either of them could speak again, Daniel's phone rang. Grace. He answered immediately. "What is it?" Her voice sounded urgent. "Sir... Michael has been in a car accident." Daniel stood up. "Is he alive?" "Yes." "But before he lost consciousness..." "He asked for you." Daniel exchanged a worried glance with Amina. Whatever Michael wanted to say... It was important enough to risk his last breath saying it. Outside, the rain continued to fall as Daniel grabbed his car keys. Neither of them realized that the truth they had been searching for was waiting in a hospital room.
