The Woman on the Staircase

528 Words
Amina felt the weight of the gaze before she saw its source. As Daniel’s grandmother led them into the elegant living room, the woman from the staircase descended with poised elegance. She wore a fitted emerald-green dress and carried herself with effortless confidence. “Daniel,” she said warmly. Daniel’s expression hardened. “Vanessa.” “So, the rumors were true.” Her gaze shifted to Amina. “You’ve found someone.” Amina offered a polite smile. “Hello.” Vanessa barely acknowledged her. Grandma clapped her hands together. “Oh, where are my manners? Amina, this is Vanessa Nansubuga. Our families have known each other for years.” Vanessa extended her hand. “It’s nice to meet you.” Amina shook it. “You too.” The handshake lasted only a moment, but Amina noticed the firmness of Vanessa’s grip. It felt almost like a warning. --- Dinner was unusually quiet. Grandma spoke cheerfully about wedding plans while Daniel responded with brief, measured replies. Vanessa watched Amina closely. “So, Amina,” she said, setting down her fork, “what do you do?” “I recently graduated with a degree in Business Administration.” “Oh.” Vanessa smiled. “So you’re unemployed.” Amina felt heat rise in her cheeks. “I’ve been looking for work.” Daniel calmly set down his glass. “She won’t need to look anymore.” Vanessa frowned. “Why not?” “I’ve offered her a position at Okello Group.” Grandma smiled with pride. “That’s wonderful!” Vanessa’s smile faded. --- After dinner, Grandma excused herself to take her medication. The moment she disappeared upstairs, Vanessa turned to Daniel. “We need to talk.” “I have nothing to say.” “You owe me an explanation.” “I don’t.” Vanessa looked at Amina. “Could you give us a minute?” Before Amina could respond, Daniel spoke. “No.” The room fell silent. “Amina stays.” Vanessa gave a bitter laugh. “So that’s how it is.” Without another word, she picked up her handbag and walked out of the house. The front door closed with a sharp slam. --- On the drive back, Amina finally asked the question that had been troubling her. “Who is Vanessa?” Daniel kept his eyes on the road. “Our families wanted us to get married.” “And you?” “I never agreed.” “Were you... together?” Daniel was silent for several seconds. “No.” “But she wanted more.” Amina looked out of the window. She suddenly understood the anger in Vanessa’s eyes. This fake marriage was not only deceiving Daniel’s grandmother. It had also shattered someone else’s expectations. And somehow... Amina had become the villain in a story she had never known existed. As the car disappeared into the Kampala night, neither of them noticed another vehicle following at a distance. Inside, Vanessa tightened her grip on the steering wheel. “If I can’t have Daniel,” she whispered, “then neither can she.” A dangerous plan was already beginning to take shape.
