Secrets Behind Closed Doors

The ballroom slowly returned to normal after the accident. Staff hurried over to clean the broken glass while guests whispered among themselves. "What happened?" "That waiter slipped." "Or was he pushed?" Daniel's sharp eyes followed the waiter as he disappeared into the kitchen. "Grace," he said quietly. His assistant appeared beside him. "Yes, sir?" "Bring him to my office tomorrow morning." Grace nodded. "I'll handle it." --- The gala continued, but Daniel barely left Amina's side. When reporters approached them, they smiled for photographs. When guests congratulated them, they thanked them politely. To everyone watching, they looked like a couple deeply in love. Only they knew the truth. As the evening came to an end, Grandma pulled Amina aside. "My dear," she said warmly, taking Amina's hands, "I've never seen Daniel this happy." Amina's smile faded slightly. "He... doesn't show his feelings very often." "Exactly," Grandma replied. "That's why I notice the little things." "What little things?" "He watches you when you're not looking." Amina's heart skipped a beat. Before she could answer, Grandma smiled knowingly and walked away. --- The drive home was unusually quiet. Finally, Amina broke the silence. "Do you think the waiter really slipped?" Daniel kept his eyes on the road. "No." "You think someone planned it?" "Yes." She looked out the window. "You think it was Vanessa?" "I don't accuse people without proof." "But you suspect her." Daniel didn't answer. His silence was answer enough. --- The next morning, the waiter sat nervously in Daniel's office. "I swear, sir," he said. "I didn't mean to drop the drinks." Daniel folded his hands. "Someone paid you." The waiter looked shocked. "I..." Grace placed an envelope on the desk. Inside were photographs from the hotel's security cameras. One clearly showed Vanessa handing the waiter an envelope before the incident. The waiter's face turned pale. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "She only told me to embarrass Miss Amina. I didn't think anyone would get hurt." Daniel's expression remained calm. "You are dismissed." The waiter lowered his head. "I'm sorry, sir." After he left, Grace asked quietly, "Should we report Miss Vanessa to the police?" Daniel stood and walked toward the window. "Not yet." Grace looked surprised. "Why not?" "Because if she's willing to do this in public..." He turned, his expression unreadable. "...I'm certain she's planning something much worse." --- Across town, Vanessa sat in her office when her phone buzzed. "What?" she snapped. The voice on the other end sounded nervous. "The waiter confessed." Vanessa closed her eyes. "Useless." "He said he didn't mention your name." "He didn't have to." She ended the call and walked to the window. "So, Daniel is protecting her already." Her reflection stared back at her. "If small tricks won't separate them..." A slow smile spread across her face. "...then I'll use the one secret that can destroy everything." She opened a locked drawer and removed an old photograph. In it stood a much younger Daniel... beside a smiling man whose face had been torn down the middle. Vanessa traced the edge of the picture. "It's time the past came back." Outside, dark clouds gathered over Kampala once again. The storm that was coming had nothing to do with the weather.
